The Machine Breakers

(1991)

The Bells Ring Anyway

I wrote this song in 1991 shortly after the first Gulf War. It was finally recorded as the title track for our 2004 album. I love the sparseness of the piano, beautifully played by Steve Preston on a grand in a school in Oxford I no longer remember the name of. Thanks Steve.

Julian Pollard
The bells ring out in a Berkshire town
As a boy lies dead in the mud he drowned
A mother stares at the telegram
But the bells ring anyway
You gave your life for a king in bed
A ruling class that is off its head
And the world don't change for a single day
But the bells ring anyway
The bells ring anyway

The wind blows cold in a southern shore
As a boy floats by he can burn no more
Rejoice! Rejoice! Is all she said
And the bells ring anyway
You gave your life for a woman's pride
To show the Times we could hold the tide
And the world don't change for a single day
But the bells ring anyway
The bells ring anyway

Nine men dead in the blackened sand
Killed outright by a friendly hand
Spill your blood for an oil can
But the bells ring anyway
The bells ring anyway
And the bells ring anyway
