L'hurling è uno sport tradizionale irlandese, alcune fonti lo fanno risalire addirittura al 400 d.C.
E' citato anche nel Táin Bó Cúailnge, il ciclo di storie dell'eroe mitico irlandese Cú Chulainn.
Nel 1366 fu vietato dallo Statuto di Kilkenny in uno dei primi (e tanti) tentativi di assimilare gli irlandesi da parte degli Anglo-Normanni. Dopo 750 anni ancora gli Irlandesi giocano ad hurling.
