Taistoihin tiemme kun toi,
missä luotien laulu vain soi,
emme tienneet kun läksimme silloin,
kuka joskus palata voi.
Elo tää juoksuhaudoissa on
meille käskynä vain kohtalon,
ja kenties matkamme määrä
sodan melskeeseen kadota on.
Päivä kun yöks’ vaihtui jo,
tuli levoksi pien’ tuokio,
ovat unehen vaipuneet kaikki,
missä lämmön suo nuotio.
Minä sinua taas muistelen,
näen poskellas viel’ kyynelen,
vaikka taiston kentälle jäisin,
sinun kuvasi on viimeinen.
missä luotien laulu vain soi,
emme tienneet kun läksimme silloin,
kuka joskus palata voi.

English version (see Introduction):
LIFE IN TRENCHES
As our way headed for battles,
where only the song of the bullets played,
we never knew as we departed,
who may sometimes return.
This life in trenches is
to us only a command of the Fate
and maybe the destination of our journey
is to disappear in the noise of war.
As the day already changed to night,
a brief moment arrived for resting,
they have all fallen asleep,
where the campfire gives warmth.
I keep remembering You again,
I still see a tear on your cheek,
Though I might be left on the battlefield,
Your picture is the last one.

VITA NELLE TRINCEE
chi potesse qualche volta ritornare.
tutti erano caduti addormentati

Dear Riccardo,
This iconic war-time song is not a traditional Finnish folk tune as written above. Here's the true story: the music of the song was composed some time during the Russo-Japanese War (1904 - 1905) by G. Dubriansky, a military band conductor in the Imperial Russian Army. The first Finnish recording of Dubriansky's walz was made by Ramblers Orchestra for the Columbia record label in 1937.
Usko Kemppi wrote the lyrics during the Winter War (1939 - 1940) between Finland and the Soviet Union. The song was recorded by A. Aimo (vocals), Vili Vesterinen (accordion) and the Latvian Bellacord Orchestra in Riga in April 1940 for the Sointu record label.
And one more thing: the title of the song is Elämää juoksuhaudoissa.
