Domestic Terror
© Tony Smith 2015
In Martin Place with Christmas looming
Some workers took a coffee break
A cowardly gunman was out looking
Some harmless hostages he might take
Just hours later the siege was ended
And two innocent lives were lost
Such violence cannot be defended
All Sydney felt a line was crossed

The media frenzy was unabated
And politicians used words tough
The place with flowers was inundated
For people knew they’d had enough
The elected leader says Muslim people
Should condemn extremists all
Advises them to really mean it
And say all violence they abhor

But every week an Australian woman
Dies alone cut and bruised
Most likely at a man’s hands
She dies in terror her love abused
Yes every week an Australian woman
Dies in terror and dies alone
She is an innocent hostage taken
For the greatest danger is in her home

Politicians must speak out bravely
Against all men who abuse and strike
They must sound like they mean it
It’s not enough to say things twice
We must do more to stop this slaughter
By kitchen knife or gun or hand
Some leadership is sorely needed
To ban this terror from our land

Start at once with your own behaviour
You must model some dignity
No snide remarks in a Cowards Castle
No smirking withdrawals must there be
No vile displays of male aggression
Or sarcastic tones in speech
No swagger or attacking gestures
Abandon language that demeans

For every week an Australian woman
Dies alone cut and bruised
Most likely by a man’s hands
She dies in terror her love abused
Yes every week an Australian woman
Dies in terror and dies alone
She is an innocent hostage taken
For the greatest danger lies here at home
