Parole di Haven Gillespie (1888-1975), compositore e liricista considerato appartenente alla cerchia dei songwriters newyorchesi denominata “Tin Pan Alley”, dalla zona della città in cui quasi tutti loro vivevano, i più grandi creatori di musica popolare americana tra la fine dell’800 e la prima metà del 900.
Musica di Beasley Smith (1901-1968) compositore originario del Tennessee.
Una bellissima canzone - credo che il vecchio GPT l’avrebbe riascoltata molto volentieri, e chissà che non l’ascolti proprio ora - che è uno standard pop tra i più famosi, celeberrima nell’esecuzione del crooner Francesco Paolo LoVecchio, in arte Frankie Laine (1913-2007), ma interpretata da innumerevoli artisti di calibro internazionale, da ultimo Bob Dylan nel suo ultimo album di cover intitolato “Shadows in the Night”.
Una canzone che fu sicuramente ispirata da uno dei temi costanti di molti blues e spiritual, come “Go Down Old Hannah”, o “Jesus Wash Away My Troubles” (quest’ultima interpretata da Sam Cooke il quale, non a caso, fece poi sua anche “That Lucky Old Sun”)
