Elvi Sinervo

Elvi Sinervo (1912 - 1986), a Finnish writer and prolific translator, wrote this poem about her cellmate while in political inprisonment during World War II. Back then, Ukraine was occupied by Nazi Germany. Today, more than 70 years later, the message of the poem seems to be timely again.

The poem was composed by Kaj Chydenius and recorded by Agit Prop in the early 1970s.
Maa vieras on ja kylmä kevät sen
Natalia, sua paleltaa
Niin kaukana on ikäväsi maa
jo tuoksuu yössä aistit huumaten akaasia

Taas kerro mulle maasta nuoruutes,
Natalia, sua kuuntelen
ja tunnen veres virran lämpöisen
kun hehkuun jähmettyneen sydämes saa Ukraina

Maa vieras on ja vieras kansa sen
Natalia, sua tunne en
Jaan osas' vain ja sellin kivisen
ja uness' kerran tuoksuu sullekin akaasia

Vaan silmäis sinen viha tummentaa
Natalia, kun muistat taas
On vieras hävittänyt armaan maas
Vain koirat raunioita samoaa, oi Ukraina

Niin hiljaa siirtyy varjot ristikon
Natalia, oi, kuuletko
Soi yössä rakentajain laulut jo
He palaavat ja silloin vapaa on taas Ukraina

NATALIA

Your country is strange and its spring cold
Natalia, you're freezing
So far away is the land of your yearning
where the night is filled with the intoxicating scent of Acacia

Tell me again about the country of your youth
Natalia, I'm listening to you
and feeling the warmth of your blood
and the glow of your heart beating for Ukraine

Your country is strange and its people strange
Natalia, I don't know you
I'm just sharing your lot and a stony cell
And in your dreams you can smell the scent of Acacia

But the blueness of your eyes is darkened by hatred
Natalia, whenever you remember
your beloved homeland destroyed by a stranger
Only dogs are wandering in the ruins of Ukraine

The shadow of the bars is slowly moving
Natalia, do you hear
the builders' songs pearcing the night
Soon, they'll be back and your Ukraine is free again

NATALIA

Natalija, ogni qual volta ricordi
