Nella poetica di Gurney – che la Grande Guerra uccise molto tempo dopo la sua conclusione, nel 1937, dopo oltre 15 anni di continui ricoveri in ospedali psichiatrici – la guerra ed i suoi orrori non disumanizzano mai i protagonisti, nemmeno il nemico, e ciò che tiene in vita il soldato non sono certo il patriottismo, l’odio e la violenza, piuttosto le “small dear things” che dalle terre del conflitto – i muri crollati della case distrutte, i tetti sconquassati dai bombardamenti… – rimandano ai ricordi di casa: i tetti rossi, i covoni di grano dorato, i frutteti, il fiume Severn che tranquillo scorre bagnando Gloucester, la città natale del poeta…
