Nella poetica di Gurney – che la Grande Guerra uccise molto tempo dopo la sua conclusione, nel 1937, dopo oltre 15 anni di continui ricoveri in ospedali psichiatrici – la guerra ed i suoi orrori non disumanizzano mai i protagonisti, nemmeno il nemico, e ciò che tiene in vita il soldato non sono certo il patriottismo, l’odio e la violenza, piuttosto le “small dear things” che dalle terre del conflitto – i muri crollati della case distrutte, i tetti sconquassati dai bombardamenti… – rimandano ai ricordi di casa: i tetti rossi, i covoni di grano dorato, i frutteti, il fiume Severn che tranquillo scorre bagnando Gloucester, la città natale del poeta…

O small dear things for which we fight -
Red roofs, ricks crowned with early gold,
Orchards that hedges thick enfold -
O visit us in dreams tonight!

Who watch the stars through broken walls
And ragged roofs, that you may be
Still kept our own and proudly free
While Severn from the Welsh height falls.
