Rendition

Extraordinary rendition or irregular rendition is the apprehension and extrajudicial transfer of a person from one country to another. During the United States war on terror under the administration of President George W. Bush, the term became associated with US practices of abducting and transferring terrorism suspects to countries known to employ torture for the purpose of interrogation. The process has continued under the Barack Obama administration, though new rules have been put in place that claim to prevent torture of abducted individuals; in August 2009, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder accepted the results of the Special Task Force on Interrogations and Transfer Policies that the U.S. will be limited to seek "assurances from the receiving country" as such

Extraordinary rendition è la locuzione inglese con cui si designa un'azione (sostanzialmente illegale, o per lo meno "extralegale") di cattura/deportazione/detenzione, clandestinamente eseguita nei confronti di un "elemento ostile", sospettato di essere un terrorista. Un esempio storico notissimo potrebbe ravvisarsi nell'operazione con cui Israele condusse sul proprio territorio il criminale nazista Adolf Eichmann dopo averlo rapito in Argentina (1960).
La pratica delle extraordinary rendition (o consegne straordinarie) è stata ripetutamente messa in atto dai servizi segreti statunitensi - in particolare, dalla CIA - , con la motivazione della lotta al terrorismo avviata dopo i fatti dell'11 settembre 2001, anche se si riscontrano casi in cui già l'amministrazione Clinton provvide a riconsegnare a Stati arabi loro cittadini sospettati di terrorismo.
