Una “chain gang song” di autore anonimo ripresa e arrangiata da Harry Belafonte e Robert DeCormier nell’album del 1960 intitolato “Swing Dat Hammer”, composto interamente da canzoni dedicate alle famigerate squadre di prigionieri-lavoratori alla catena che negli USA sono state attive, soprattutto negli Stati del sud, fino agli anni 50 ma che sono presenti ancora oggi sporadicamente in qualche Stato, seppur senza essere più il “girone dantesco” di un tempo…
Si vedano al proposito le molte canzoni già presenti sul sito, come Look Over Yonder e Diamond Joe dello stesso Belafonte, o I'm Free From the Chain Gang Now di Johnny Cash e le altre lì citate nel commento introduttivo…
L’orso grigio infuriato e pericoloso di questa canzone non è il temibile plantigrado, ma la sadica ed odiatissima guardia carceraria che con la sua frusta dà continuamente il tormento ai prigionieri…
Robert DeCormier (noto anche come Bob Corman, nato nel 1922 e forse ancora vivente) è stato un celebre compositore e direttore d’orchestra, famoso soprattutto per la sua direzione di “Der Kaiser von Atlantis”, capolavoro del compositore ebreo austriaco Viktor Ullmann, e di “Brundibár” del compositore ebreo ceco Hans Krása, entrambi imprigionati dai nazisti a Theresienstadt e poi eliminati ad Auschwitz nel 1944 (purtroppo nonostante i miei sforzi e anche quelli del CCG/AWS Staff ancora non si è riusciti a reperire i testi originali in tedesco e ceco delle due opere).
