In realtà la prima esecuzione di questa canzone fu di tal Charles "Valentino" Harris ma fu portata al successo nel 1977, diventando l’inno adella comunità gay americana, da Carl Bean (come Valentino, anch’egli cantante della scuderia Motown), che in seguito divenne pastore protestante e fondatore dell’Unity Fellowship Church Movement, una chiesa aperta a gay e bisessuali.
Il brano è stato recentemente riproposto e remixato da Pet Shop Boys e Jimmy Sommerville.
La canzone “Born This Way” di Lady Gaga è un omaggio a questo “anthem” gay.
