Molti autori l’hanno proposta in musica. Secondo quanto riportato dall’importante database The Lied, Art Song and Choral Texts Page, il primo dovrebbe essere il compositore britannico Gerald Finzi (1901-1956) nel suo “Requiem da camera” del 1924.



Nella sua produzione letteraria Thomas Hardy ha spesso condannato la guerra e i suoi orrori, ma in questa poesia a prevalere è la visione ottimistica del futuro del genere umano al termine di ogni conflitto: le dinastie e le loro guerre sono destinate ad essere dimenticate, scomparendo nella notte della Storia, mentre la Vita, ancora una volta, come sempre, trionfa.
Hardy scrisse questa poesia con riferimento alla Grande Guerra ma molto probabilmente fu concepita molti anni prima, visto che egli conobbe anche la carneficina della guerra franco-prussiana combattuta 45 anni prima.

With an old horse that stumbles and nods
