Era la fine del 1980. Ronald Reagan stava stravincendo le elezioni presidenziali. John Lennon era stato appena ammazzato a New York e la futura first lady Nancy Reagan, con rara sensibilità, rivelava alla stampa che, come ogni buon americano, anche lei dormiva con una pistola nel comodino… “E’ solo una piccola, tenera pistola”, dichiarò ridendo.
Suo marito, prima durante e dopo i suoi mandati, contrastò fieramente ogni progetto di limitazione alla libera vendita di ogni tipo di arma sul suolo degli States ed fu, insieme ai Bush, un grande sponsor della lobby dei fabbricanti d’armi, rappresentata dalla National Rifle Association. Bisogna inoltre ricordare che anche nel 1999, in occasione della strage alla Columbine High School a Denver in Colorado, un altro vecchio attore hollywoodiano, Charlton Heston, mostrò una sensibilità analoga a quella di Nancy e suo marito… Heston, portavoce della NRA, non si fece scrupolo a presiedere il congresso dell’associazione proprio a Denver, a pochi giorni da quel massacro nel corso del quale 13 ragazzi erano stati uccisi da due loro compagni minorenni, poi suicidatisi, che si erano armati di mitragliette e granate acquistandole liberamente su internet e negli stores locali…
