Theodorakis mise in musica questa e altre poesie di Eleftheriou nel 1968, mentre si trovava agli arresti domiciliari a Zatouna, in Arcadia, dove la giunta militare lo aveva deportato con tutta la famiglia a causa della sua partecipazione al movimento “Lambrakides” e al PAM, il Fronte Patriottico.
Στις ερημιές και στα στενά μου στήσανε καρτέρι
και μ' επικήρυξαν φονιά
εκείνοι που έχουν απονιά κι όσοι κρατούν μαχαίρι.

Στους δρόμους και στις αγορές γράψανε τ' όνομά μου
σε πανηγύρια και χαρές
στον ύπνο μου εφτά φορές μού 'σφαξες την καρδιά μου.

Στου στέλνω απ' το βασιλικό τη ρίζα να μυρίζεις
μα το παλιό μου μυστικό
κι απ' τ' άδικο κι απ' το κακό ποτέ σου μην αγγίζεις.

LA DENUNCIA

In gole abbandonate mi tesero un agguato
e mi denunciarono come assassino
gli spietati e i portatori di coltelli.

Sulle strade e nelle piazze scrissero il mio nome,
a feste popolari, a banchetti di nozze.
Nel sonno, sette volte m'hai trafitto il cuore.

Ti mando da annusare radice di basilico,
ma il mio antico segreto
e così il bene e il male, non li toccare mai.
