Once

"I was always moved by the thought of people who had given their lives that others might benefit, and particularly the poor soldier. Self-sacrifice is altruistic and an admirable human quality which truly deserves remembrance. I used Laurence Binyon's now famous poem as my inspiration for this one. When the Berlin Wall came down it was such a good moment for the world. One of the best moments of my life. Seeing a lot of people doing something very right, and overdue, and together. A hugely inspirational feeling."
(Roy Harper, tratto da “The Passions of Great Fortune”, volume edito nel 2003 e contenente I testi commentati delle sue canzoni)

(Bernart Bartleby)
And in the morning
They shall not grow old, as we are left grow old
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun, and in the morning
We will remember them

They built a wall boys, it stayed up for thirty years
we've torn it down now, clattering round their ears
You know how it is, with spirit(s),
they just couldn't hold us
Brothers and sisters

The world you died for, was all but a pack of lies
It had to fall down, and keep on falling
you gave us the world they promised you,
and in the morning
we are the flowering
we are the flowering youth
Berliners.
