January 11, 2015 marks 13 years since the opening of US detention
facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Supporters of human rights and due process are today joining together from all corners of the world to mark the event in the form of protests and peaceful actions. In Australia, Dr. Aloysia Brooks, torture prevention advocate, and songwriter and human rights advocate, Les Thomas, have released the song ‘Guantanamo Blues’, and included an open letter (below) to President Barack Obama calling for him to close Guantanamo, restore due process and human rights.
The song was written to raise awareness about the ongoing situation of those detained in the facility. Most of the 127 prisoners that remain have been cleared for release, but remain imprisoned without charge or trial. On February 25, 2024, Aaron Bushnell, a 25-year-old serviceman of the United States Air Force, died after setting himself on fire outside the front gate of the Embassy of Israel in Washington, D.C. Immediately prior to the live-streamed act, Bushnell said that he was protesting against "what people have been experiencing in Palestine at the hands of their colonizers" and declared that he "will no longer be complicit in genocide", after which he doused himself with a flammable liquid and set himself on fire.
As he burned, Bushnell repeatedly shouted "Free Palestine!" while one Secret Service officer pointed a gun at him and two others attempted to extinguish him.

A beam weighing twenty tons breaks, the construction site collapses and five workers remain under the rubble. Five more workers victims of capitalist profit: it happens every day, all over the world.
The lyrics of this song were written in 1968 by Pietro Bianconi, an Anarchist partisan who wrote a number of books about trade and workers’ struggles in the 1960/70s. The music was composed by Paolo Pietrangeli and Giovanna Marini. The song was also sung in a shorter version by Caterina Bueno for Dario Fo’s folksong show Ci ragiono e canto n° 2. Also sung by Gang in “Calibro 77” (2016).

"At the beginning of July 2010 I visited the Battle of Britain memorial site, on the cliffs, at Capel-le-Ferne, near Folkstone, in Kent
It was just a couple of days before the annual ceremony, which was held to mark, and remember, the start of that battle in 1940.
As I stood there on the cliff edge looking out towards France, I tried to imagine what the remaining members of the' Few' might have been thinking, each time that they attended the event over the years. What thoughts did they have as the dignitaries spoke, as the band played, and the flypast went over their heads?
My song Capel-le-Ferne is what I imagine they might have been thinking, on that day, and maybe every other day, for the preceding 70 years.
Now in February 2024, 14 years after I wrote Capel-le-Ferne, Group Captain John Hemingway (aged 104) is the last remaining living member of the Few ."

Protagonisti delle proteste sono i WOMBLES (White Overalls Movement Building Libertarian Effective Struggles) gruppo anarchico e anticapitalista che si distingueva per il loro abbigliamento bianco, simile alle Tute Bianche italiane.
Nonostante gli scontri violenti, alcuni manifestanti (i “ragazzi eleganti” della rivolta) mantennero sempre un aspetto impeccabile.

Big Louisiana, lead; Willy Rafus, and Arthur Davis.
Originally this song accompanied the driving of spikes into the wooden ties which held railroad tracks in place. The basic tool was a ten-pound hammer with two heads, hardly more than two inches in diameter. The steel-driving man swung freely in a complete circle about his head, then brought the hammer unerringly down on the spike. Since the railroad's disappearance at Angola, the same song has often been sung, as it is here, to facilitate wood-chopping. Unlike many of the group worksongs, "Let Your Hammer Ring" has artistic unity.
