Secondo Irish folk songs l'autore della canzone, risalente agli anni successivi al 1920, è ignoto.
Si tratta di una satira antibritannica sulle condizioni dell'Irlanda dell'epoca; per adattarla al passare dei decenni sono stati compiuti aggiustamenti e variazioni e ne esiste una riscrittura pressoché completa diffusa in occasione di una vicenda di cui fu protagonista l'IRA, l'abigeato di un ccavallo da corsa di nome Shergar appartenente all'Aga Khan.
La versione qui riportata è quella cantata da The Irish Brigade nel corrispondente video.

Despite the fact that The Voidz have always been a very politically charged band, these are some of the most blunt lyrics they have put in a song yet.
The choruses vary a bit, to (seemingly) touch on different parts of acts of violence committed by officials and the military.
On the first chorus, Casablancas sings about war. Wars, no matter the countries involved, are always justified using the same statements and sentiments. We are always explained by the government we are in danger, or our territory is, and a certain country or organization is a threat to national security. At the end of the day, The Voidz see it as nothing but murder (since a great number of soldiers and civilians die during wars).
The second chorus seems to be the same, though the use of word ‘officer’ may be hinting it’s also about police brutality.

“Weapon of Choice” incorporates some profound lyrics. Since we’re living in an age of corporate greed and extreme nationalism, if we don’t want to “waste” love on this nation, where should we place our love?
You know, you’ve got this extreme going on here where, if you don’t believe in Bush’s definition of God, you’re an evildoer. So for me, that song is about making a declaration against capitalism and the system that exists. You know, I find it funny that people have to vote in secret : behind a little curtain. (Laughs.) It’s like nobody’s supposed to know what anybody stands for. So I just want to be out there saying this is what I don’t believe in. But I also want to stand up for what I do believe in. Family, friends, music, and creativity-that’s where love is.

The base, used for training French soldiers, was originally established in 1902 on 3,000 hectares (7,400 acres; 12 sq mi) of uncultivated heathland. Michel Debré, Minister of Defence in the Georges Pompidou administration, announced that the base would be extended to 13,700 hectares (34,000 acres; 53 sq mi) and that the necessary land would be expropriated in the public interest.

Il rifacimento di Lauryn Hill elenca le radici della discriminazione e della conseguente rabbia della popolazione afroamericana negli Stati Uniti, dalla schiavitù alla segregazione razziale per arrivare alle recenti violenze della polizia contro la popolazione nera. Black Rage infatti è la furia cieca, ma anche la rabbia dei neri di fronte all'ingiustizia e alla discriminazione.

A massive conscious reggae hit condemning the fighting between African tribes on the mother continent, fighting for control of the land and natural resources some of the more prominent tribal wars of the time included the crisis in Rwanda when the Hutu controlled government massacred roughly 750'000 of their Tutsi Rwandan brothers and sisters in just over 3 months. The United Nations came under heavy criticism for their slow response to the genocide in which the use of rape as a weapon caused a spike in HIV infection rates. This and other similar murder of Africans by Africans is what inspired this collaboration on this, Buju’s first international album release.

“Da un punto di vista armonico e ritmico, Sound Of A War è molto semplice e potente, il che la rende forse la canzone più “Mellow Mood” del nuovo album. Il modo in cui è stata prodotta e la sua sonorità però sono un buon esempio del sound generale dell’intero disco. Per quanto riguarda il testo, purtroppo la guerra continua ad essere un argomento di attualità che tocca tutti noi.
