Tra i principali meriti di Billy Bragg, qui in "combutta" con Wilco, c'è quello di aver reso musica ad alcune canzoni di Woody Guthrie che non avevano fino a quel momento potuto trovarla. Così è stato, ad esempio, (ma non in questo album) per All You Fascists, che però in questo sito è ascritta "motu proprio" a Woody Guthrie, e per tutte le canzoni di questo album del 1998. Ispirata alla omonima canzone di Joe Hill
L'ho sentita per la prima volta ieri, al concerto del primo maggio, cantata dai Modena City Ramblers.
Mi sembra quasi un'Internazionale moderna, ma soprattutto il verso "War has always been the bosses' way, sir", mi sembra quantomai attuale, però non saprei se tradurre "bosses" come plurale di "boss" o di "bossy", ma forse è spesso la stessa cosa!

Vi sono, acuiti, tutti i caratteri della canzone originale; sicuramente una delle più belle "variazioni sul tema" mai create da un autore ben preciso. Ma non è forse giusto parlare di una "variazione sul tema", perché Billy Bragg ha chiaramente inteso scrivere non una variante, ma una vera e propria, e nuova, versione dell'Internazionale da cantare comunemente. Le sue origini sono del resto queste, dato che la versione è nata da un episodio che ha avuto come protagonista Pete Seeger, che, peraltro, ha cantato e inciso più volte la versione americana del canto. Tutto il mondo conosce almeno due sue canzoni, The Green Fields Of France (No Man's Land) e The Band Played Waltzing Matilda, ma le conosce cantate dai più grandi cantautori e gruppi internazionali; quando qualcuno osa dire: "Ma guardate che queste canzoni non sono di Tale o Talaltro, ma di Eric Bogle...", la risposta è invariabilmente: "Eric chi...?"
