La lunga genesi dell'album, originariamente ispirato al libro del pedagogista ed esperto di media Neil Postman, intitolato appunto "Divertirci da morire" (Amusing Ourselves To Death), subì una grossa spinta dallo scoppio della prima Guerra del Golfo, in modo analogo a quanto era avvenuto per The Final Cut e la guerra nelle Falkland. Waters, sull'onda emotiva di quell'avvenimento e dei fatti di Piazza Tien-An-Men in Cina, modificò ed aggiunse testi in corso d'opera, per approdare ad una riflessione generale su pro e contro dei media in rapporto a guerre, violenza, repressioni: da un lato la TV inchioda i regimi repressivi alle loro responsabilità (il caso della protesta in Cina), dall'altro la cinica indifferenza del telespettatore occidentale, ormai assuefatto a qualunque "spettacolo", banalizza anche la guerra fino a ridurla... Perché Wish You Were Here tra le CCG? Anche se potrebbe sembrare una splendida canzone d'amore (chi non l'ha mai dedicata ad una qualche fidanzata?) in realtà è la canzone (così come tutto il disco) dedicata dai Pink Floyd a Syd Barrett fondatore del gruppo, che aveva lasciato la band ed era finito in manicomio. Secondo me starebbe bene nel percorso sulla pazzia.

To protest the fact that a year after the terror attack by Israeli armed forces destroyed most of their homes, hospitals, schools, and other public buildings, they have no possibility to rebuild because their borders are closed. The would be Freedom Marchers wanted to peacefully draw attention to the predicament of the Palestinian population of Gaza. The Egyptian government, (funded to the tune of $2.1 billion a year, by us, the US tax payers), would not allow the marchers to approach Gaza. How lame is that? And how predictable! "The Ballad of Bill Hubbard" features a sample of WW1 veteran Alfred "Alf" Razzell, a member of the Royal Fusiliers (much like Waters' father Eric Fletcher Waters had been in the following war) who describes his account of finding fellow soldier William "Bill" Hubbard, to whom the album is dedicated, severely wounded on the battlefield. After failed attempts to take him to safety, Razzell is forced to abandon him in no-man's land. This sample is continued at the end of the title track, at the very end of the album, providing a more upbeat coda to the tragic story.

A prototype album cover was reportedly distributed to his record company, which included caricatures of three figures resembling David Gilmour, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright, floating in a martini glass. However, it was several years before the album was finally released (Roger refused to release it as long as his former bandmates were still on Columbia Records' roster), and it is unknown how much the material was changed in the interim. At the very least, the songs criticizing the first Gulf War, George Bush senior and Tiananmen Square were new or heavily rewritten, as those events occurred after the original writing.

The first stanza is a poem written for Danish Amnesty International by Halfdan Rasmussen. The lyrics of the rest of the song are Roger's response to a newspaper article about the story of a Serbian soldier who helped an Albanian woman lying wounded in a burned-out building.
Halfdan Rasmussen (January 29, 1915 in Copenhagen – March 2, 2002) was a Danish poet. He was known for his nonsensical children's verse and his serious adult writings about social issues and human rights.
Rasmussen was a resistance fighter during the German occupation He became very well known and respected as a poet, nearly becoming a national poet of Denmark. One of his poems, Ikke Bødlen, was featured as one of the best poems on Human Rights on a 1979 book published by Amnesty International Denmark, and would be later translated into the first verse of Roger Waters' song Each Small... Towers of Faith
Si tratta di un brano della colonna sonora di "When The Wind Blows", un misconosciuto, bello, dolente e tristissimo cartoon del 1986. La storia di una coppia di anziani coniugi britannici che si prepara ad affrontare i rigori di una guerra imminente come se si trattasse della II guerra mondiale, fiduciosi che con un po' di sacrificio e di fortuna riusciranno a scamparla ancora una volta... non si rendono conto però che la nuova guerra sarà nucleare...
Regia di Jimmy T. Murakami, dal romanzo "When The Wind Blows" di Raymond Briggs, che firma anche la sceneggiatura del cartoon.

(In "Sheep", Waters sings "I've looked over Jordan and I have seen / Things are not what they seem"; in "The Bravery of Being Out of Range", he sings "I looked over Jordan and what did I see / I saw a U.S. Marine in a pile of debris".)

Siamo all'inizio della seconda facciata, quella più claustrofobica, durante la quale Pink, mattone dopo mattone, completerà il muro che lo isolerà dal resto del mondo. Eppure musicalmente "Goodbye Blue Sky", dopo le tetre sonorizzazioni introduttive, possiede momenti di grande dolcezza grazie agli ottimi impasti vocali. Ma è solo un'impressione. L'atmosfera torna cupa e tetra con la voce di Gilmour che si libra sui bassi pesantissimi. Pink sta entrando inesorabilmente in un vicolo cieco.

Originariamente intitolata “You've Got to Be Crazy”
Dall’album “Animals”, registrato nei Britannia Row Studios, gli studi che i Pink Floyd avevano appena comprato ed allestito in alcune vecchie sale parrocchiali dell’Islington londinese.
In copertina un’immagine della centrale elettrica Battersea Power Station tra le cui ciminiere volteggia un “Pig on the Wing”, un maiale volante. Durante la seduta fotografica per realizzarla, il pallone ripeno di elio raffigurante il maiale ruppe gli ormeggi e se ne volò per i cieli di Londra atterrando poi su di una fattoria senza far danni.
“Algie”, questo il nome del porco volante, divenne uno dei simboli della band inglese.
Sul retro, una piccola fotografia in bianco e nero che mostra brandelli di stoffa impigliati sul filo spinato.
