On the album "Born Ready"

Many of Waln's songs tackle Native American social issues. In this particular song, introduced and concluded by spoken words by John Trudell, he put's the social issues in the larger perspective of a perpetuation of the historical "Indian Wars" in a still lasting "white war" against the identities, ways of life of the native people. As oppression has many ways, it needs a lot on both side to find a way out. Resistance on one side and apologies on the other won't do it alone. It needs deconstruction of the minds and decolonization of the memories. And the key is sovereignty. And the misunderstandings about it.

Album: Médine France (2022)

Médine ne se sent pas concerné par les paroles de La Marseillaise et a décidé de la remplacer par “un joli poème”. Ce qui l'oppose ainsi à l'hymne français, qui a pu être critiqué par son côté sanglant et guerrier.

Selon Médine, cette musique représenterait davantage la diversité de la France. Enfin, le clip vidéo démontre la volonté de Médine à réconcilier les français entre eux en les faisant poser sur une photo de famille.

The song honors the spirit of Anna Mae Pictou-Aquash, a Mi'kmaq activist who dedicated her life to help Indian people everywhere, organizing social care, involved with educational projects and participating to protests. She was involved with the American Indian Movement (AIM), participated in the Wounded Knee occupation in 1973, became the higher-ranked woman in the AIM. She disappeared in December 1975 and was found murdered in February 1976. She was 30 years old. (For further details, see the accompanying notice to the song "Anna Mae" by Larry Long)
At the time Harjo wrote the poem/song, the murder of Anna Mae Pictou-Aquash was still a cold case.

Cartoline dall'esilio

Il Volume III del progetto discografico "CARTOLINE DALL'ESILIO" contiene 9 canzoni di guerra. Contro la guerra, of course.
Pubblicato a ottobre 2023. Mi ci hanno costretto gli anni che stiamo vivendo. Invero non ho fatto molta fatica: ho drizzato le orecchie, mi sono messo in ascolto, e le canzoni erano lì, soffiavano nel vento.
Ne propongo una.

Due ragazzi (un giovane uomo e una giovane donna, anche il canto è a due voci) che per motivi diversi entrano in quel tritacarne - e tritacoscienze – chiamato guerra. Siamo in Ucraina, oggi, o in altri luoghi e altre epoche? I due sono dalla stessa parte? Su fronti avversi? E chi lo sa, in fondo non ha molta importanza saperlo.

Il noto valzer di Johann Strauss figlio fa parte della colonna sonora del film Fuga da Sobibor del 1987, non a caso. La musica mette in evidenza la contrapposizione tra la Mitteleuropa e l’universo concentrazionario , le spudorate falsità di facciata della propaganda nazista da un lato e il sistema di morte dall'altro.

Negli scorsi anni il messaggio della "Laudato sì" di papa Francesco scosse il mondo, tanto che ne nacque un movimento globale che silenziosamente sta crescendo!

Tikkun Olam allora quale contributo all'impegno per la salvaguardia del creato. La complessità che caratterizza il nostro tempo si può cogliere nell'intreccio che ho provato a ricostruire. Per questo "Tikkun Olam": antica esortazione ebraica a "riparare il creato", letteralmente.

Il 7 ottobre 2023, il brano era già finito, ma... fermai, come tutti, incredulo per quel che accadeva e senza fiato per quel che accadde dopo!
Sulle prime pensai ad aggiungere l'equivalente arabo, poi mi convinsi che no; la radice ebraica non appartiene soltanto a Israele: un'indicazione tradizionale non comporta necessariamente una "scelta di campo".

Piuttosto... che non resti canzone: Tikkun Olam!

'31 Depression Blues - E. Sturgill - 1964

Ed Sturgill was born in Appalachia, Virginia in 1910 and worked as a miner when he was young. This song, which he wrote, addresses many of the mining issues at the time such as cheating done at scales by mine operators (miners were paid by the ton) the illegal use of script for payment and the efforts to organize the UMW*. It was the passage of the NRA ** that secured union representation but, as the song mentions, it was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court (“and the big Supreme Court judge then he said it wasn’t right”). Sturgill did not get around to record the song until 1964, one year before his death.
