'31 Depression Blues
'31 Depression Blues - E. Sturgill - 1964
Ed Sturgill was born in Appalachia, Virginia in 1910 and worked as a miner when he was young. This song, which he wrote, addresses many of the mining issues at the time such as cheating done at scales by mine operators (miners were paid by the ton) the illegal use of script for payment and the efforts to organize the UMW*. It was the passage of the NRA ** that secured union representation but, as the song mentions, it was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court (“and the big Supreme Court judge then he said it wasn’t right”). Sturgill did not get around to record the song until 1964, one year before his death.

Ciao! Grazie come sempre per il vostro lavoro prezioso. Vorrei segnalarvi due problemi che vedo nella traduzione che proponete qui. Il più importante e' che "pa'" non significa padre ma e' una abbreviazione colloquiale di "rapaz", cioè ragazzo, un modo di rivolgersi a un amico (un po' come a Napoli si usa "guaglio'"). E' interessante il fatto che sia una espressione usata solo in Portogallo e non in Brasile, quindi esprime una vicinanza e denota chiaramente gia' dal primo verso il fatto che l'autore brasiliano si stia rivolgendo a un amico in Portogallo senza nemmeno nominare il paese. Molti siti brasiliani che commentano il testo della canzone riportano questa spiegazione. Un'altra osservazione invece riguarda la traduzione di "sei quanto e' preciso navegar", che e' una citazione dai riferimenti stratificati. La Farge in fact loved to tell stories, as it seems about himself as well: he faked his native origins, although he did not fake his profound research and empathy for the fate of the native people. Yuval Taylor, cowriter with Hugh Baker of 'Faking It: The Quest for Authenticity in Popular Music' (Norton, 2007), came at least to that conclusion after having specifically researched the topic. Tematica simile alla traccia " Unemployment Stomp " del 1938 e a “ Black, Brown and White" del 1951 ( entrambe di Broonzy, v.pagine di CCG) la cui 3.a strofa dira':
“I went to an employment office,
I got a number and I got in line,
They called everybody's number,
but they never did call mine.”
La frustrazione , in quegli anni comune a molti altri suoi coetanei di colore ,di non riuscire a trovare un lavoro ,e la necessita' di trasferirsi altrove nella speranza di essere piu' fortunati.
Il protagonista si trova in una affollata sede di collocamento al lavoro paragonata con ironia ad una vasca di pesci rossi ( “…that old goldfish bowl “). e con un numero di chiamata evidentemente troppo alto per poter sperare che la sua richiesta di lavoro venisse accolta.

I’m Just A Bum - Big Bill Broonzy – 1935
Il protagonista della canzone puo'essere sia un uomo che una donna.La seconda strofa infatti cita : " I'm just a bum woman " e "Lord,I'm just a poor boy ". E'comunque molto triste, è solo,allontanato da casa dal padre, solo il Signore puo' comprendere la sua drammatica situazione. Vive la sua quotidiana poverta' e solitudine di "homeless" con l'aggravante del colore della sua pelle , motivo per cui tutti lo abbandonano. Da ultimo implora il poliziotto che lo ha fermato di non portarlo via . Tristezza, poverta', abbandono dagli affetti familiari e pregiudizi razziali sono le parole piu' significative di tutta la composizione.

Canzone pervasa da un senso di ironia mista a rassegnazione.
Big Bill non è certo contento di essere arruolato ed " usato " dal "caro vecchio" zio Sam.
Ma il senso del dovere ha il sopravvento.
Quando poi afferma che un giorno lo zio Sam lo rimanderà indietro c'è un chiaro riferimento a quanto puó accadere in combattimento ai comuni soldati, non certamente ai signori / padroni della guerra.
