Je me disais, Lucien l’âne mon ami, que j’allais l’insérer sans commentaire, car il y a tant à faire ici. J’en étais là de mes pensées en cours de traduction quand je me suis mis à ruminer. Il m’est d’abord venu l’idée que si l’on remplace « De Caporetto à Udine » par « De la Panne à Verdun », on peut en conclure immédiatement que c’était pareil sur tous les fronts, d’un côté comme de l’autre : à l’Ouest, rien de nouveau, sans compter le front de l’est où la même guerre produisait les mêmes effets. Even basic human decency appears to be melting away faster than the polar ice caps. I wanted to write and sing about some of these things… not only to convey my concerns, but also to state my belief that, if we remain vigilant to the truth, things can eventually turn around.
