Nel 1933 la gran parte dei cabarettisti tedeschi aveva già abbandonato la Germania. Fu allora che Erika ed il fratello Klaus - in aperta polemica con l’ingombrante figura del padre Thomas Mann, fino a quel momento silenzioso rispetto al nazismo ormai trionfante – decisero di farsi carico di quella scena letteraria e teatrale in via d’estinzione e di proporla in chiave apertamente anti-nazista.

While teaching in the Middle East, I had a candid discussion with a group of Arabic women who were hosting my visit. In the conversation they shared a variety of very ugly statements made directly to them that showed how extreme prejudice was part of their everyday life. Hearing these statements, crystallized my sense that – as musicians and educators - we must work harder in every culture and every location for children who understand the value and dignity of all peoples. Prejudice and intolerance are not natural but are taught and; as educators, we can expose our children to world cultures in a way that creates little global citizens and a world of greater dignity and peace."

Versi di Erich Kästner. Ignoro in quale raccolta furono originariamente pubblicati. Gli scritti di Kästner vennero tutti bruciati dai nazisti nel 1933.
Trovo la poesia illustrata da Paul Flora in un volumetto edito nel 1959.

La musica è di Will Elfes (1924-1971), scultore e musicista tedesco. Nel suo album “Will Elfes Singt Kästner” del 1970.

Prima della sua prematura scomparsa Will Elfes ha messo in musica molte poesie di grandi autori, come François Villon, Christian Morgenstern, Bertolt Brecht, Kurt Tucholsky, Erich Kästner, Joachim Ringelnatz, H. C. Artmann.
Come scultore Will Elfes è stato anche autore di importanti opere, come quelle esposte nell’ex campo di sterminio di Dachau:

Quella qui di seguito riportata è contenuta nella raccolta “American Ballads and Folk Songs” (1934) curata da John ed Alan Lomax, padre e figlio, grandi etnomusicologi ai quali si deve in buona parte la salvaguardia del patrimonio musicale folklorico, bianco e nero, del sud degli States.

Lo stesso Alan Lomax interpreta il brano nel suo album “Texas Folk Songs”, dove è accompagnato da Guy Carawan alla chitarra e la banjo e da John Cole all'armonica.
