"Sinàn Capudàn Pasciá" is based on the story of a Genoese mariner, Scipione Cicala, who at a young age was captured in a battle with the Ottoman Navy and taken to Constantinople in 1561. As a Christian, he had to choose between either death or converting to Islam and becoming a member of the Janissaries, which began in the 14th century as an elite corps of slaves recruited from young Christian boys that formed the Ottoman Sultan's household troops and bodyguards. Cicala chose conversion and then rose to the highest ranks, gaining favor from Sultan Mechmed II who bestowed on him the honorary title Pasha and eventually appointed him as Grand Admiral (Kapudan Pasha) of the Ottoman Navy (1591-1595). - Dennis Criteser

Comment: I just wanted to say that I wouldn’t purchase anything from someone that hates his own race. Pathetic.
I felt that I should reply to the uninformed taunt that this represents, so I wrote the following:-
‘I Hate The White Man’ was written in response to the many injustices that the peoples/tribes of Europe had inflicted on greater Humanity in the modern age. Roughly over the period since the more precise mapping of the planet at the beginning of the age of discovery; which brought us into contact with peoples we considered, wrongly, to be inferior. Perhaps the crucible for this was the bloodbath of 14th Century Europe, second only to the 20th Century in terms of carnage, but that strays into opinion and theory.

"Smisurata preghiera" is a song where again the lyrics were from De André and the music from Fossati. Five years prior, De André had discovered the writings of the Colombian Alvaro Mutis. He was so taken with them that he reached out to Mutis and asked if he would have any objections to De André taking lines from his books to use in a song he wanted to write. Mutis was game, and De André proceeded to use lines from two novels and one anthology of poems, putting them together and rearranging and changing them until he had built the song he had in mind. To give a couple examples, the opening lines of the song - "High above the shipwrecks from the viewpoint of the towers" comes from Mutis's poem "Stars for Arthur Rimbaud" which includes the line "And from the viewpoint of the highest tower." "Princesa" is about Fernanda Farias de Albuquerque, who was born in Brazil in 1963 as a male but from the age of six years identified as female. She emigrated to Spain at the age of 25 and then to Italy, where she was a sex worker in order to pay for a sex change operation. She was incarcerated for the attempted murder of the madam of the brothel where she worked after the madam had stolen money from her. In jail, she met a Sardinian shepherd who had attempted a bank robbery. The two spoke about Brazil and Sardinia in a mix of languages. Another inmate, sentenced to two life sentences, undertook to write the story of Fernanda/Princesa, and after a year of collaboration the book was published in 1994, on which De André based this song. The happy ending of the song did not mirror what happened in real life - Fernanda/Princesa ended her life in 1999 without having completed the transition to being female. - Dennis Criteser

The shipwreck of the London Valour was an actual event that took place in Genoa in 1970. But the focus in this song is on the people who came out to the Genoa docks to rubber neck and watch the unfolding tragedy in morbid fascination. The lyrics are somewhat obtuse, with many possible references to political events and cultural figures from Italy's Years of Lead, (the late 1960's to the early 1980's), which were marked by tremendous social upheaval and terrorism. - Dennis Criteser

In "Ottocento," De André sings in the style of opera buffa and the song ends with Tyrolean yodeling, the idea being to describe 20th century society in 19th century style. He explains that "it's a style of singing falsely cultured, an approach suggested to me by the pomposity of a character who, more than a man, is a vacuum cleaner: he breathes in sweet sentiments, affections, vital organs and objects in front of him to which he displays a single mental attitude: the possibility of buying and selling them. . . . Here is painted a portrait of the bourgeoisie, in the exact moment of its affirmation of power: the world of the protagonist is dominated by money and by huge quantities of merchandise." The phrase "bronze of Versace" calls to mind the Riace Bronzes, a nice contrast between the superficial and fleeting beauty that pop culture craves and the more enduring beauty of past treasures of art. - Dennis Criteser

"La morte" uses the music of “Le verger du roi Louis,” released in 1960 by the French singer/songwriter Georges Brassens, setting to music a 19th century poem by Théodore de Banville. The poem alludes to the "gardens of King Louis" - the parts of his forest that were reserved for those who were hanged, in "clusters never visited." De Andrè feared death, something he spoke about on several occasions, and death is a presence in many of his songs. The opening lines of De Andrè's lyric are quite similar to the first lines of Cesare Pavese's 1950 poem "Death Will Come and Have Your Eyes." - Dennis Criteser

"Disamistade" is about blood feuds, which until quite recently were common in Sardinia, and which are probably still bubbling under the surface there according to this article on a 2008 vendetta killing of a poet. In contrast with the other songs on this album, which portray different faces of solitude, this song is about a violence that can happen when people live in close proximity to each other, where envies and slights can fester and erupt into killings that continue in an unending progression as one spilling of blood must be avenged by another. "Disamistade" was translated to English and covered by the American folk/rock band The Walkabouts. - Dennis Criteser

La propaganda antisovietica e antirussa fino a qualche decennio fa doveva almeno schierare un Solzenicyn: adesso è ridotta a fare affidamento a qualche depilata che -si noti bene- non si è certo strenuamente data da fare per prendere il potere e neppure per contrastarlo in qualche modo efficace, ma semplicemente per farsi mettere in galera.
E per riuscirci ha dovuto anche insistere.
Il signor Israel Shamir ha fornito da anni un sobrio e corretto inquadramento di questa sgomitante conventicola, che il sottoscritto ha avuto la compiacenza di tradurre, condividendone per intero il contenuto.
L'equivalente ucraino parimenti stolto ed irritante ma meglio sostenuto, meglio fornito, più visibile e più fattivamente utile agli interessi "occidentali" si è rapidamente rivestito ed è scomparso lasciando poche tracce una volta raggiunto l'effetto voluto dalla committenza, quello di fare dell'Ucraina un cimitero.

S’i’ fosse foco
Accogliendo dopo un paio d'anni le proposte di Rodolfo e di Bernart, la poesia (e la relativa canzone, attribuita a De André "in proprio") viene tolta dagli "Extra" nell'ambito della ristrutturazione completa della sezione dedicata a Fabrizio De André. Però, va detto, la decisione definitiva ha molto più a che fare con gli intenti di De André stesso, dato che il carattere di invettiva contro i potenti e, in generale, contro il mondo intero è maggiormente una visione "vulgata" moderna piuttosto che l'ambito originale del componimento di Cecco Angiolieri. La visione di Angiolieri come "poète maudit" ante litteram è sorta con il Romanticismo, che lo rivendicò con forza ai suoi ideali e che è responsabile dell'immagine che, in ultima analisi, è passata anche alla canzone di De André. Cecco Angiolieri visse sì una vita abbastanza avventurosa, ma con tutta probabilità fu assai meno ribelle di come... (continua)

“The Patriot Game” è una irish rebel song scritta da Dominic Behan e dedicata a Fergal O’Hanlon un giovanissimo soldato dell’IRA morto durante l’operazione militare -o l’attacco terroristico per altri- (lui e i suoi compagni cercarono di far saltare con le bombe una caserma della Royal Ulster Constabulary nel villaggio di Brookeborough – contea Fermanang) nella notte di inizio del nuovo 1957. I “martiri” di quella notte furono in realtà due, ma più che commemorare l’azione militare in sè, Behan voleva riportare sulla bocca di tutti la questione irlandese e mettersi dal punto di vista dei combattenti dell’IRA che avevano continuato la loro lotta dopo il Trattato del 1921.

Credo che Borghezio c’entri molto poco con questa canzone…
All’epoca Roy Harper si attirò parecchie critiche, lo tacciarono di essere razzista e islamofobo, ma lui rispose che dopo la strage di Lockerbie, ordita da Gaddafi, e l’esecuzione in Iraq del fotoreporter britannico di origine iraniana Farzad Bazoft, arrestato per spionaggio, torturato, processato sommariamente e impiccato per ordine di Saddam Hussein, dopo questi episodi l’autore di “The Black Clouds of Islam” disse che l’aveva scritta perché si era rotto le palle, perché lui non era mai stato politicamente corretto e perché le religione è il più grave virus che ammorba l’umanità, tema questo costante nella poetica di Roy Harper e originato durante l’infanzia, quando viveva con il padre e la matrigna, ferventi seguaci dei Testimoni di Geova…

Aggiungo ancora che, proprio per la sua feroce critica al sistema, Roy Harper fu in quegli anni molto ostracizzato dai media, tanto che decise, provocatoriamente, di promuovere questo disco mandando a radio e testate giornalistiche delle demo firmate con identità fittizie, tutte anagrammi del suo nome ('Per Yarroh', compositore norvegese, 'Rory Phare', un designer alla moda, ed 'Harry Rope', un membro degli Hell's Angels). "... descendants of Smith" ebbe attenzione immediata, ma solo fino a quando i (re)censori scoprirono la beffa ordita dall'autore...

Ho sempre amato molto questa canzone,vogliate gradire la mia traduzione,il più fedele possibile,con qualche piccolissima licenza,necessaria a rendere anche in italiano l'espressività del testo,
