Bob Geldof wrote this song when he heard about the San Diego elementary school massacre.
In January 1979, Brenda Spencer , a troubled 16-year-old who lived across the street from a schoolyard in San Diego, took the semi-automatic rifle her father had given her for Christmas and began firing. Four people died and eight children were injured. When asked why she did it, she answered "I just don't like Mondays".

Nel gennaio del 1979 Bob Geldof sente la notizia di una sedicenne di San Diego, Brenda Ann Spencer, che si è resa protagonista di una sparatoria nella scuola di fronte a casa sua uccidendo due persone e ferendone altre nove. Alla domanda perché avesse fatto questo gesto lei risponde "I don't like Mondays" (ovvero "Non mi piacciono i lunedì"); questa frase ispira il cantante dei Boomtown Rats a scrivere una canzone.

The first stanza is a poem written for Danish Amnesty International by Halfdan Rasmussen. The lyrics of the rest of the song are Roger's response to a newspaper article about the story of a Serbian soldier who helped an Albanian woman lying wounded in a burned-out building.

Halfdan Rasmussen (January 29, 1915 in Copenhagen – March 2, 2002) was a Danish poet. He was known for his nonsensical children's verse and his serious adult writings about social issues and human rights.
Rasmussen was a resistance fighter during the German occupation He became very well known and respected as a poet, nearly becoming a national poet of Denmark. One of his poems, Ikke Bødlen, was featured as one of the best poems on Human Rights on a 1979 book published by Amnesty International Denmark, and would be later translated into the first verse of Roger Waters' song Each Small... Non si sa esattamente che cosa significhi Dle yaman; sicuramente non è armeno. In arabo, Yaman è il nome dello Yemen: una melodia (e una storia) di derivazione araba? Yaman è anche il nome di una città dell'Iran; ma l'ambientazione, persino con il monte Ararat, è armena. Si tratta, probabilmente, della canzone popolare più nota nell'intera lingua armena.

E' una delle centinaia di canzoni popolari raccolte da Komitas Vardapet (o Vardabet), ovvero "Padre Komitas" dato che vardapet è un titolo religioso della chiesa armena, di cui egli era sacerdote. Padre Komitas, musicista di valore, la rielaborò affinché potesse essere eseguita e conosciuta da tutti gli armeni. Ha un'origine ben precisa: The Edge la scrisse ispirandosi alla vicenda del poeta "feniano" irlandese John Boyle O'Reilly (1844-1890), che fu deportato in Australia a causa delle sue poesie. La "Terra di Van Diemen" nominata nella canzone è l'odierna isola di Tasmania; in realtà Boyle O'Reilly non vi fu deportato (lo fu, invece, in Australia occidentale), ma il titolo della canzone di The Edge risente dell'esistenza di un'antica ballata popolare irlandese recante lo stesso esatto titolo (Van Diemen's Land).
