Traduzione molto approfondita (non superficiale come tutte le altre). Chi sa se nella mia vita, ancora giovane, potrò mai trovare le parole e le giuste espressioni per esprimere il fascino di questo capolavoro. I Genesis sono il contrario della superficialità, riescono a comporre testi fiabeschi ma con riferimenti significativi, come ci ha ricordato Riccardo con la sua splendida traduzione, con origini molto remote.

Irish involvement in the Spanish Civil War has been covered by a number of books, beginning with Michael O'Riordan's 1979 book, The Connolly Column. This was followed, 20 years later by two others (see below). These books have resulted in increased research into the Irish role in the war leading to new details being found about those involved.
In 1936 General Franco, of the Army of Africa, invaded Spain. He planned to overthrow the democratically elected centre-left government. He hoped it would quickly fall, but backed by the working class it fought back, defeating the initial surge by the fascists, leading to a three year Civil War.

Come ci comunica dalla Svizzera il sig. Mauro Maiano (che ringraziamo vivamente), si tratta di una canzone risalente non all'epoca napoleonica (come avevamo in un primo momento erroneamente interpretato) ma all'epoca della mobilitazione per la I guerra mondiale. La canzone, che non è anonima ma di autore, proviene dal Giura bernese ed è in gran parte in tedesco alemannico (schwyzertüütsch). Il Giura elvetico ha fatto parte fino al 1978 del Canton Berna; adesso è in parte un cantone autonomo, ma una sua porzione continua ancora oggi a far parte del cantone della capitale. E’ terra di lingua francese: questo spiega il nome della protagonista e, ovviamente, il ritornello. Il tenente colonnello Thomas Legler, proveniente dal cantone svizzero di Glarona (Glarus), comandava un reggimento della Guardia Svizzera (Garde Suisse) nell'esercito napoleonico che, fallita la disastrosa invasione della Russia, ebbe a subire la più rovinosa delle ritirate con il famoso passaggio della Beresina (in russo Березина; in bielorusso Бярезіна). Il 28 novembre 1812 scrisse questo famoso canto tentando di rianimare in qualche modo i propri soldati morenti; ne venne fuori però un terribile canto di disperazione. I soldati svizzeri lo cantarono proprio al momento del passaggio del fiume, certi di perire. Non a caso fu scelto da Louis Ferdinand Céline come exergo per il suo capolavoro, Voyage au bout de la nuit (Viaggio al termine della notte), un'opera che, nella sua prima parte, è una cruda descrizione degli orrori della I guerra mondiale. La più nota canzone popolare scozzese sulla battaglia di Culloden (16 aprile 1746), l'ultima battaglia di terra che sia stata combattuta sul suolo britannico, che segno la fine definitiva dell'indipendenza scozzese e la distruzione dei clan e della società tradizionale.
La battaglia fu in realtà combattuta tra le forze giacobite (si veda anche Song For Ye, Jacobites [Ye Jacobites By Name]), che sostenevano la pretesa al trono di Carlo Edoardo Stuart (detto Bonnie Prince Charlie) e il preponderante esercito inglese, che sosteneva il sovrano della casa di Hannover, il re Giorgio II. Detto fatto. Non c'è stato neppure il tempo di abituarsi all'idea, ed ecco che il perfido Riccardo Scocciante, che oramai ha preso a definirsi il "Cantastorie Carogna", se n'esce fuori con una nuova composizione. Stavolta, ohimé, ha preso di mira un noto politico italiano di estvema sinistva, uno che animava le manifestazioni per la pace con tanto di bandierina, uno che si faceva fotografare col Subcomandante Mavcos, uno che...insomma, uno che adesso espelle dal partito chi dice che in Iraq l'Italia c'era andata a far la guerra e a difendere interessi economici, non una "missione di pace", e uno che il due giugno scorso s'è fatto vedere tutto compunto mentre sfilavano cavvi avmati, missili, mezzi covazzati, bazzùca, ometti al passo dell'oca, cazzi di gomma, casseruole al plutonio, urànii impoveriti, isole dei famosi & altre belle cosine del geneve. Who'll Stop The Rain?
... vorrei solo aggiungere che questa magnifica canzone dei CCR dà il titolo ad un altrettanto bellissimo film americano di uno dei padri del free cinema britannico, Karel Reisz (ebreo cecoslovacco riparato in Inghilterra dopo l'invasione nazista). Il film è tratto dal romanzo "Dog Soldiers" di Robert Stone. Da noi, come spesso avviene, uscì con un titolo del cavolo che ammiccava al pubblico dei film d'azione: "I guerrieri dell'inferno"...
"Who'll Stop the Rain (1977), allegorico, è un thriller ad inseguimento; è la storia di un pacco di eroina trasportato da un reduce del Vietnam a Los Angeles per conto di un giornalista, conteso ai due da poliziotti corrotti e da professionisti della droga; nello spettacolare scontro a fuoco finale, il soldato muore, permettendo all'amico e a sua moglie di mettersi in salvo; sarà sepolto nel deserto e per croce avrà il fucile.
