Bread and Roses
Rose Schneiderman and Helen Todd are both (separately) credited with coining the slogan “Bread and Roses.” Both were suffragists: Todd a labor activist and Schneiderman a labor union leader. The slogan inspired James Oppenheim’s poem “Bread and Roses,” published in December 1911 in The American Magazine. The Lawrence, MA textile strike began in January 1912 and was also known as the “Bread and Roses Strike.”

Haman wanted to kill all the Jews of Persia, and in the end it was the Jews who wound up killing Haman and all his followers. This revenge fantasy had a ready parallel in Hitler, of course. In “Shelakhmones Hitlern” (Purim Gifts for Hitler), an unknown poet wrote

Songs of the Vilna Ghetto is a compilation LP record released in 1969, featuring twelve Yiddish songs from World War II era. The songs were composed by the inmates of the Vilna Ghetto during the Holocaust and are sung by Nechama Hendel, Chava Alberstein, and Shimon Israeli with accompaniment from the CBS Israel Orchestra and Choir, conducted by Gil Aldema.
The album contains an 8-page booklet with lyrics in the Hebrew language, photographs from the ghetto, and historical information about the songs in English. According to the liner notes, the recording "was prepared by the Yitzhak Kalznelson House of the Ghetto Fighters, at Kibbutz Lochamei Hagetaot, Israel, in co-operation with the Vilna Organisation [sic] of Haifa."

Roman Grinberg is a Vienna based Jewish Artist. He wrote the Yiddish version in 2020 during the COVID pandemic and performed it for the first time as a world premiere during his online concert for the international project:

Zyame Telesin fu un fine letterato di cultura yiddish e poeta del Novecento apprezzato non soltanto in Unione Sovietica. L’unica sua opera reperibile online è un libro di poesie in yiddish pubblicato nel 1980. Purtroppo non abbiamo potuto trovare alcuna traduzione delle sue poesie in rete.
Viene citato nei saggi che trattano del rapporto tra cultura russa e cultura yiddish e nelle monografie di letteratura degli anni ’60.
Zyame Telesin (15 luglio 1909 -1996)
Nacque a Kalinkovitsh (Kalinkavičy), Polesia, Bielorussia, nella casa di un fabbro. Nel 1929 si trasferì a Mosca, dove studiò nella facoltà yiddish della Seconda Università statale di Mosca. Negli anni 1931-1940, pubblicò poesie in Shtern / Stella e Oktyabr / Ottobre, tra le altre riviste, a Minsk.

La versione (parziale) in yiddish di Chaim Zhitlovski (Chaim Zhitlowsky, Хаим Осипович Житловский [1865-1943])
Interpretata da Dorel Livianu, 1979
Un du akerst, la versione yiddish di Chaim Zhitlovski, utilizza soltanto alcune strofe del testo originale di Georg Herwegh, oppure ne "concentra" alcune altre. Cantata sulla musica di Eisler, Zhitlovski vi aggiunse un ritornello „onomatopeico“ (da cantarsi dopo ogni strofa) che non ha nessun riscontro nell'originale.

Come dire: tornare alle origini. Nessunissima intenzione di lanciarsi qui in disquisizioni su Bob Dylan e l'ebraismo; però mi ero stupito di non aver finora trovato una versione in yiddish di Blowin' in the Wind. Addirittura mi ero messo a farne un tentativo di traduzione io stesso, che ho lasciato dopo quattro versi perché, fortunatamente, ci aveva pensato qualcun altro con risultati, ovviamente, infinitamente migliori. Nientepopodimeno che Katle Kanye sul suo blog, poi. Katle Kanye è una specie di “Elena Ferrante”, nel senso che non si sa esattamente chi sia; è lo pseudonimo di un celebre scrittore, critico e giornalista chassidico che scrive sia sul “Maariv” israeliano (in ebraico), sia sul “Farverts” americano (in yiddish).
