Una delle tante versioni di questa canzone assai cara agli irlandesi, che fu composta dopo la grande (e sconfitta) rivolta del 1798, guidata da un gruppo di rivoluzionari di ispirazione repubblicana, la Society of United Irishmen, sulla quale si vedano – tra le diverse presenti sul sito – le canzoni Henry Joy e The Croppy Boy.

Quanto a Gotta Get a Grip (traducibile con “devo darmi una calmata”), qui si va giù duri: «Il mondo è sottosopra, guidato da pazzi e pagliacci, nessuno dice la verità e il manicomio governa la città». Come se ne esce? Provando di tutto: «Ho provato una deviazione e la coercizione, meditazione e medicazione, la cultura di Los Angeles e l’acquapuntura, ingozzarmi di cibo e incontri di sesso, pazzia indotta e il Cristianesimo, lunghe passeggiate e guide veloci, bordelli e immersioni di profondità». Niente da fare: «Piovono immigrati, i rifugiati entrano sotto pelle, teniamoli giù, teniamoli fuori. Intellettuali chiudete il becco. Picchiamoli con un bastone. La fonte è “Songs of the Newfoundland Outports”, a cura di Kenneth Peacock, 1965

Una canzone che in una versione raccolta in Nova Scotia termina semplicemente con la prigionia del soldato disertore, mentre in un'altra scovata nel Newfoundland (sempre in Canada) negli anni 50 dall'etnomusicologo Kenneth Howard Peacock (1922–2000) prosegue nel racconto. “Willie” viene fucilato per diserzione e l'ufficiale che ha comandato il plotone d'esecuzione (anvédi 'sto stronzo!) si mette a corteggiare la di lui ormai ex fidanzata Mary. La quale lo lascia avvicinarsi e poi gli spara, uccidendolo e vendicando il suo amore... Brava! Ben fatto!

Da “The Branches”, secondo album della trilogia “The Family Tree” inaugurata nel 2011 e interamente dedicata alla storia di una famiglia immaginaria, i Northcotes, attraverso più generazioni.

“Robert’s son, Chase (also mentioned as the older brother in “Mountains”), is writing home from his hospital bed. He was shot in the abdomen and doesn’t know if he will pull through. He makes peace with his fate over the course of writing it, but dies soon after. Robert receives the body of his son.” (Radical Face)

Chase è partito militare ed è stato spedito su qualche fronte a combattere. Viene ferito e scrive dal letto dell’ospedale. Sa che sta morendo e fa pace con sé stesso. Nella seconda parte del brano (“Letters Home: Aftermath”, brano presente nell’EP parallelo “The Bastards: Volume Two”, sempre del 2013) il padre Robert riceve le spoglie del figlio.

“The song was inspired by a story I read about Canon O’Neill who wrote the modern lyrics to The Foggy Dew. Came up with my own arrangement for the upcoming release and read about how he wrote it after he attended the first sitting of the new Irish Parliament, known as the Dail. The names of the elected members were called out, but many were absent. Their names were answered by the reply “faoi ghlas ag na Gaill” which means “locked up by the foreigner”. the line just hit me and it call came from there… it’s an homage to Foggy Dew basically”

It’s a testament to Kaia’s skill as a lyricist that the following pair of songs, ‘Paradise Fell’ and ‘Rising Down’ – both inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement – can include thought-provoking political points within what may seem to be simple descriptive narratives. It’s a powerful combination – think of Abel Meeropol’s 1937 poem Strange Fruit, as interpreted by Billie Holiday – poverty, racism and the host of daily microaggressions inflicted on Black people the world over are all invoked with grace and subtlety. ‘Rising Down’ in particular should be enough to make any white person reflect on the part she plays in these continuing inequalities and what she can contribute to the vital process of anti-oppression work. There’s no doubt in my mind that these two songs together are the highlight of the album, more than worth the price of admission on their own.

Saturday Johnny & Jimmy the Rat – Hulett and Swarbrick

Blue Murder’ was one of two songs he wrote about the suffering of those who worked in the blue asbestos mine in Wittenoom, Western Australia. Countless miners and their families who paid with their health and lives after being exposed to lethal asbestos fibres, a health hazard well known to those who ran the mine.

Alistair originally wrote the song for a play while still in Roaring Jack. He eventually recorded it for his third solo album “Saturday Johnny & Jimmy the Rat”, together with folk legend Dave Swarbrick on fiddle!

1969: Fervono movimenti per i diritti civili in Irlanda del Nord (come il Nicra, Norther Ireland Civil Right Association, o il People’s Democracy), che denunciano le disparità tra le due comunità nordirlandesi. La tensione sale alle stelle in corrispondenza della rivolta cattolica a Derry, scoppiata in opposizione a una marcia unionista che aveva attraversato il Bogside, storico quartiere cattolico della città. I disordini e le violenze tra le due comunità si estendono anche a Belfast, dove i britannici decidono di costruire un muro - ancora oggi esistente - per separare il quartiere cattolico da quello protestante, nell’ovest della città. È l’inizio dei cosiddetti ‘Troubles’ (letteralmente: disordini), che vedranno da questo momento in avanti il sistematico scoppio di violenze tra le due fazioni.

Questa canzone era già inserita a commento di Mrs. McGrath, con la quale condivide il soggetto, il soldato va in guerra e torna senza le gambe, ma le assonanze finiscono qui. Questa risale alla guerra franco-indiana (1754-1763), ovvero al fronte Nordamericano della guerra dei sette anni tra Inglesi e Francesi, quella in cui è ambientato "L'Ultimo dei Mohicani"

Le 3 octobre 2013, une embarcation transportant environ 500 migrants africains fait naufrage près de Lampedusa, île italienne proche de la Sicile. La catastrophe fait 366 morts, ce qui la classe au deuxième rang des plus grandes tragédies en Méditerranée depuis le début du XXIe siècle.
Fortement marquée par cet évènement, constamment rappelé avec les innombrables catastrophes en mer arrivées par la suite, Awa Ly a écrit cette chanson en réaction, de colère, d’appel au secours, d’appel aux dirigeants.

My heart spoke in words and music that it is not about what is OVER the rainbow, but here UNDER the rainbow, where we must evolve to learn to get along if our children are to have a future. By reversing the octave leap in the melody to begin the song, I offer a melodic tribute to the song composed for The Wizard of Oz

Q.The title track of this record, “Binary,” combines a fun and funky groove with rather deep thoughts. How did that song come about?
A. Well, it’s just a poem, really. It started as a poem. And then I put a groove to it so that it wasn’t a show downer. [Laughs.] And it’s really just one little groove. I mean, sometimes, I feel like, fuck it, who needs a chorus, or a bridge, or whatever? Songs don’t always have to abide by structure. As far as the lyrics, the song starts with “in the blue glow of gizmos,” which is where most of us are residing these days—in isolation, interacting with machines. Praticamente è diventato lo squalo repubblicano che lui stesso parodiava in questa canzone. Come si cambia per un po' di soldi! E pensare che negli anni 70 Green girava con una chitarra alla Woody Guthrie, con su scritto “These six strings neutralize the tools of oppression”...
