One of the more political tunes on the album is “Good Old American Values.” The lyrics are a biting satirical critique of America’s long history of subjugation of Native Americans.
For Obomsawin, who is of Abenaki descent, there are personal reasons for recording this song. In the album’s liner notes, Obomsawin shares: “As an Indigenous songwriter, I hope that it becomes equally unacceptable to write and sing anti-Native lyrics as it now is to write and sing anti-black lyrics.”

"I recorded that in Compass Point, Nassau. Back then, it was a song about a cowboy being hanged. It had a weird, stream of consciousness lyric. It talks about this hanging and it finishes up, 'When the rope hit the spot at the end of the drop the last thing he heard was her calling, "Hold on, I'm coming home.'" So it's about his relationship with a woman, in some way.
But on the new record, it's about Obama's drone warfare. The lyrics have been adapted to include the death of a specific Yemeni girl in a cruise missile attack. So the story is new, the ideas are new, but they all fit around the music of the song."

Il primo singolo dei Duran Duran, estratto nel 1981 dall'omonimo album della band inglese.
Erano i primissimi anni 80 e il punk si era contaminato con i sintetizzatori per dare vita alla new wave. In Inghilterra un gruppo di ventenni appassionati di glam rock e di pop, misero insieme la new wave con i ritmi decisamente ballabili della disco music per dar vita a un nuovo genere che venne prontamente battezzato "New Romantic" proprio dal testo di questa canzone, il loro primo grande successo che li avrebbe portati a essere gli idoli di folle di ragazzine urlanti.
Se in quegli anni furono etichettati come boy band, riascoltandoli adesso bisogna ammettere che - a differenza delle boy band degli anni '90 tipo Take That o Backstreet Boys - il gruppo era musicalmente valido e a suo modo innovativo.

Clotilda è il nome dell'ultima nave utilizzata per la tratta degli schiavi negli Stati Uniti. I resti della goletta sono stati rinvenuti nel fiume Mobile, un in Alabama, grazie alla bassa marea causata dal «ciclone bomba» che si è abbattuto nel gennaio del 2018 sulle coste orientali del Paese. C'è voluto un anno per determinare che si trattasse proprio di quella imbarcazione, grazie allo studio dei registri navali di diverse imbarcazioni. La nave operò in segreto, decenni dopo il divieto di importare schiavi imposto dal Congresso Usa nel 1808, e fu intenzionalmente affondata (e incendiata dal capitano William Foster) nel 1860, per nascondere le prove del suo utilizzo.

As a child growing up in the suburbs of Washington DC, I was always afraid of war. I had nightmares of missiles in the sky and soldiers in my backyard, most likely brought upon by the political tension of the early 1980’s and my proximity to the Nation’s Capitol. My youth was spent under the dark cloud of a hopeless future.
Last fall, as I was driving my 11 year old daughter to school, she turned to me and asked, “Daddy, is there going to be a war?” My heart sank in my chest as I looked into her innocent eyes, because I realized that she was now living under that same dark cloud of a hopeless future that I had felt 40 years ago.
I wrote “Waiting on a War” that day.
Everyday waiting for the sky to fall. Is there more to this than that? Is there more to this than just waiting on a war? Because I need more. We all do.
This song was written for my daughter, Harper, who deserves a future, just as every child does.

The tune captures a dark moment in US history. It deals with three enslaved black women Anarcha, Lucy, and Betsey who were experimented on by James Marion Sims. Sims is commonly referred to as the founding father of modern gynecology. The video juxtaposes footage of the band performing with flashes of images related to Sims and the enslaved women he violated.
Front women Shawna Potter made the following statement about her motives for composing the tune and making the video: “This song is about all the stories our country has buried or ignored. I wanted to memorialize Anarcha, Lucy, and Betsey in the best way I knew how, through song, and the shooting of this video just happened to coincide with tearing down a statue of J. Marion Sims, the man who experimented on them and other enslaved women.”
