Stai a vedere che il disco più significativo dell'intero movimento Black Lives Matter di questo rovente 2020 rischia di arrivare da un gruppo oscuro londinese di cui sappiamo poco o niente, con zero promozione e distribuito da un'etichetta indipendente londinese.
I SAULT sono una formazione emersa dal niente lo scorso anno con due dischi sorprendenti di soul, afrobeat, funk e r&b intitolati “5” e “7”: canzoni appassionate, suoni essenziali e radicali, esecuzioni semplici e concrete.

Poche sono le testate che se ne sono occupate, ma quelle poche ne sono rimaste infatuate: Guardian, radio KEXP, il dj Gilles Peterson e Bandcamp (che ha inserito i due album al secondo posto del listone dei 100 migliori dischi del 2019). .

"Little Boy," the concluding track on SAULT's latest album, Untitled (Rise), is about protecting the child's innocence as long as possible. On an otherwise upbeat collage of funk, soul and Afrobeat, "Little Boy" ends (Rise) on a sorrowful note, as wistful piano chords score the singer's plea to the youth. "When you get older," a woman declares, "you can ask me all the questions, and I'll tell you the truth about the boys in blue."

The boys, of course, are police officers, the ones sworn to protect and serve, as long as you have the right skin color. Children — Black children, especially — supposedly don't know this yet. But as the song infers, Black boys are demonized by racist cops who see them as a threat no matter what. As they grow up, they're somehow considered more dangerous. Cynthia Kay Cockburn, sociologist and peace activist, born 24 July 1934; died last year, 12 September 2019.
In 1993, she was key to establishing WiB in London and was instrumental in sustaining it over decades as an organiser and participant in weekly vigils at the statue of Edith Cavell in Trafalgar Square. Cynthia joined the street choir Raised Voices in 1994. The political choir Raised Voices was another important part of Cynthia’s local political engagement. As well as singing in the choir, she wrote the lyrics to several of the songs that have made up its repertoire.
