In occasione dei BET Hip-Hop Awards 2017, lo scorso 2017, Eminem si è esibito in un freestyle ricco di riferimenti e critiche a Donald Trump. L'evento è stato seguito da numerose persone anche in diretta streaming questa notte. A sorpresa di tutti il rapper di Detroit, molto cambiato fisicamente, si è esibito in Storm, con un freestyle apertamente rivolto al presidente Donald Trump.

“Quello che abbiamo ora come presidente è un kamikaze, e probabilmente causerà un olocausto nucleare. E mentre scoppierà il bordello, lui metterà benzina nel suo aereo e volerà in giro, aspettando che tutto si calmi e le bombe finiscano di cadere”, recita un pezzo del freestyle di Eminem. Il video sta facendo il giro del web nelle ultime ore ed ha già totalizzato milioni di visualizzazioni, e ottenuto grande consenso da parte del suo pubblico.

Con gli Skydog ho inciso un cd che ha avuto un buon successo di critica e dove oltre a cover di rock-blues presentavamo anche qualche brano inedito. Di mio c’era “Drifting Mine” che in una successiva versione acustica, presente nel mio primo album solista, sarebbe stata poi scelta dallo staff di Neil Young per una particolare classifica dedicata alle canzoni contro la guerra e per la pace, scritte per protestare contro il secondo conflitto in Iraq. “Songs Of The Times” ospita più di tremila artisti e io sono tra i pochi italiani presenti in questa particolare graduatoria. La canzone la scrissi nel 1987 ed è stata anche la mia prima in inglese.

On the day of the peace marches prior to the current Iraqi war fiasco I attended a photographic exhibition about the use of depleted uranium in Iraq in the first gulf war and the effects of over ten years exposure to the population.

America and Great Britain filled Iraq with the equivalent of thirty-five Hiroshima bombs during that war resulting in sheep born with five heads and eight to ten deformed babies now born per day in Bagdad hospitals. Prior to that war one deformed baby was born a week.  No doubt that figure will rise in years to come from the effects from the use of more in this war now. After watching the huge turnout at the peace rallies on television news that night I sat down and wrote this song.

Justice and Pride

In 1935 there was documented evidence of the dangers of asbestos. However companies ignored the evidence and mined it up until the 1980’s. As the song says ‘ it is becoming one of the world’s largest industrial disasters’. Although this song appeared on my 1994 CD Justice And Pride it is as relevant as ever as James Hardie Industries continues to try and avoid its responsibilities to the worker’s it poisoned during the mining, distribution, and use of it’s asbestos products.

Wittenoom è oggi una città fantasma in Australia. Walking This Land

The inspiration for this song came after reading some testimony given to the Stolen Generationenquiry and my recollection of an old Cinesound documentary about two small aboriginal girls who were taken from their family and adopted by a white family. The storyline was to show how 'lucky' these girls were to be given a real chance at life. My lasting image of that documentary was at the end when the girls (in new white frilly dresses) were being led up to their new bedroom and the commentator said - ‘yes dreams really do come true’.

This song took a while to eventuate. I was compelled to write it out of disgust at our current government’s hypocrisy and racist attitudes towards people’s who have suffered so much in their own homelands and have travelled across our northern waters in unseaworthy boats in the hope for a new future for themselves and their families. The fact that Australia sends troops to Afghanistan and Iraq because the local citizens need help and protection and we imprison theirrefugee’s who come from there is utter hypocrisy.

John Howard and his liberal party counterparts should be forever condemned for using the plight of these people’s lives to further their own political ends. The lies about queue jumping and children overboard, the imprisonment of children and the torture many of these refugee’s have been subjected to, deserve condemnation - for now, and into the future.

I'll be the One

A well-known Larrakia singer and community leader in Darwin, Northern Territory, June Mills blends country and western with her Phillipino/East Timorese musical heritage through use of organ, vocals and acoustic guitar. In her song “Sweet Child of Mine” on her albumI’ll Be the One (2005) she sings of the sorrow of the mother who hopes her child will remember her family and her identity. The song also emphasizes the loss of language, culture, and identity of children who were forcibly removed from their families.
The impact of the Stolen Generation policies has left its mark on Mills’ family as her grandmother was taken from her family when she was 6 years old. Bob Randall’s Brown Skin Baby, recorded in 1970, was one of the first songs written about the Stolen Generations. The song explores Randall’s own traumatic past of being “stolen”, echoing the voice of his mother as she cries and grieves for her “brown skin baby”. The song’s reception brought the events of the Stolen Generations to national and international audiences. It is not surprising that it quickly became an anthem for Indigenous communities (Barney & Macklinary, 2010).

Nel 1987 un piromane dà fuoco alla casa di Tom Petty a Los Angeles distruggendola quasi completamente. Il cantante decide di ricostruire la casa esattamente nello stesso punto usando lo studio di registrazione nel seminterrato, l'unica parte che si era salvata dall'incendio, come fondamenta.

Da questo episodio personale prende spunto questo classico degli Heartbreakers che inseriamo in ricordo di Tom Petty, che se ne è andato oggi proprio per un attacco di cuore...

La bellezza della canzone è nella semplicità del testo, che si può adattare a qualsiasi situazione, personale o collettiva, d'amore o politica. In fondo è lo stesso concetto di Ain't Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me Around: non cederò, non mi farò abbattere, resisterò...

In celebration of 2014’s Naidoc Week, Briggs, along with Gurrumul, Dewayne Everettsmith and B2M performed “The Children Came Back” live on Australian radio-station Triple J as part of their long running segment ‘Like A Version’.

A year later in lead up to Naidoc Week 2015 and the release of Archie Roache’s 25th Anniversary Edition of ‘Charcoal Lane,’ a studio version was released of the song.

The song is somewhat of a triumphant sequel to Archie Roach’s deeply sad “They Took the Children Away”

The first verse of Brigg’s version makes references a number of successful contemporary indigenous people including Gavin Wanganeen, Anthony Mundine, Adam Goodes, Patty Mills and Cathy Freeman. Shane Howard had an epiphany when he went camping out near Uluru in 1981. That's when the idea for his song Solid Rock came into his head.
Solid Rock was Howard's response to the injustices he saw in some of Australia's indigenous communities in 1981.

La generazione rubata, o in inglese Stolen generation, è il nome con cui vengono generalmente indicati quei bambini australiani aborigeni e isolani dello stretto di Torres che furono allontanati dalle loro famiglie da parte dei governi federali australiani e missioni religiose ai sensi di alcune norme parlamentari vigenti nei singoli Stati. Partendo dal 1869, gli allontanamenti forzati continuarono fino al 1969, anche se in alcuni luoghi proseguirono sino agli anni '70.
Celandosi dietro leggi di tutela dei minori, le leggi che favorirono l'allontanamento dei bambini aborigeni di fatto condussero all'assimilazione coatta degli aborigeni.

L'ospitalità verso lo straniero è alle radici della civiltà e l'amicizia fra i popoli è l'alternativa principale alla guerra.In tempi di xenofobia e innalzamento di muri, è confortante risentire questa canzone scritta da A P (Alvin Pleasant Delaney) Carter nel 1937, probabilmente sulla base di un blues popolare, incisa dalla Carter Family nel 1938 e ripresa in seguito da molti autori statunitensi.

I live on land in the Central Tablelands of New South Wales. The land was taken by force from the Wiradjuri people.
The song is my attempt to acknowledge the history of dispossession.
I used the tune to 'Joe Hill' after hearing Paul Robeson sing this union song.

John Eckford, brother of my 3 x great grandmother Jane, had an eventful life. Born in 1801, he was involved in the mistake which led to his father William being condemned to death for sheep stealing. He was appointed Constable at Wallis Plains (Maitland) in 1825.
Following violence between settlers and Aboriginal people, Governor Darling despatched Lt Lowe to the ‘frontier’. Colonial Secretary Bathurst issued orders that the raids of the locals should be repelled just as would raids by any other ‘state’. Aboriginal people were to be considered invaders in their own land.
Lowe was committed for trial following the summary execution of a prisoner ‘Jacky Jacky’. He was quickly found not guilty by the jury which consisted mainly of army officers. During the trial, the question arose of whether Aboriginal people were subjects of the crown and... (continua)

I wrote ‘Sunshine’ in 1970 in probably less time than it takes to sing it. It was the height of the Vietnam-Cambodia adventure there in Southeast Asia. I was really saddened by that and really angry… It’s an angry young man’s complaint about what was going on politically and militarily in our name. I was knowing people that were coming back from the war and they were never the same – if they came back at all.

I had just undergone a really violent draft board pre-induction physical, where I ended up in an emergency room and ended up in a sanitarium I guess you’d call it. It was all in the interest of not going to Vietnam, but it left an indelible mark on me for life.
