“Georgia .. no peace I find..” ..What was Ray Charles' most famous hit of the 1960s was actually written in 1930 by Hoagy Carmichael and Stuart Gorrell and first recorded that same year by Hoagy Carmichael himself. However, the song has been most often associated with soul singer Ray Charles, who was a native of the U.S. state of Georgia and recorded it for his 1960 album The Genius Hits the Road.
It has been asserted that Hoagy Carmichael wrote the song about his sister, Georgia.. But Carmichael wrote in his second autobiography Sometimes I Wonder that saxophonist Frankie Trumbauer told him he should write a song about the state of Georgia. He jokingly volunteered the first two words, “Georgia, Georgia...”, which Carmichael ended up using while working on the song... (continua)

Le strofe 1-4-5-6-7 costituiscono la classica sequenza utilizzata normalmente dai carcerati del Texas nella loro esecuzione del “ Midnight Special “
Il ritrovarla da un capo all'altro degli stati del sud ci indica l'enorme rilevanza che questi versi dovevano avere per le comunità dei detenuti neri.

It’s the most American thing to protest, and protest songs have been so embedded in American culture: Bob Dylan, Nina Simone. I think the world right now is sort of in a perpetual mourning period, and I wanted to have a song that had weight but also had hope.

Water,boy where you hidin'?
An important liberation song in the history of slavery and the civil rights movement is Water, Boy. It is a slave work song, a somber reminder of the conditions black people were forced to live through. Water is as valuable as saffron on the field of a plantation, but I assume it's absence was as normalized as the sun rising and setting everyday. I assume the enslaved weren't given enough water (or anything, if anything) to keep them in good health as forced laborers. I'm sure the white overseers and slaveowners made sure to keep their thirst quenched, though. It's been said, they demanded water and would get the attention of the waterboy by singing Water, boy where you hidin?
Today when this song is performed it is titled “Waterboy” instead of “Water, Boy” and I equate this to trying to soften up the history, but let’s not forget... (continua)

Forty-one Bullets è un brano scritto in questi giorni, ispirato all’omicidio di Amadou Diallo, studente liberiano residente a New York.
Ucciso nel febbraio 1999 da 4 poliziotti, sulla porta di casa, con 41 colpi di pistola, in 32 secondi.
Gli autori furono tutti assolti.
Vogliamo esprimere tutta la nostra amarezza e disgusto rispetto a episodi intollerabili, purtroppo sempre più’ frequenti, in cui arroganza, ignoranza e odio razziale possono spingere un uomo ad uccidere un altro essere umano.
Dal Ku Klux Klan ad Amadou Diallo a George Floyd ai recenti fatti di cronaca italiana e mondiale, la storia continua a ripetersi dimostrando che l'uomo persevera nel non imparare nulla dal suo passato.

La version moderne de la chanson aurait été chantée pour la première fois par des ouvriers du tabac, dirigés par Lucille Simmons lors d'une grève en 1945 à Charleston, en Caroline du Sud. En 1947, la chanson fut publiée sous le titre We Will Overcome dans une édition du People's Songs Journal (une publication de People's Songs, une organisation dont Pete Seeger était le directeur), à titre de contribution et avec une introduction de Zilphia Horton, alors directrice musicale de la Highlander Folk School de Monteagle, au Tennessee (une école de formation des adultes qui a formé les délégués syndicaux). Il pezzo di Gil Scott-Heron, pubblicato proprio cinquant'anni fa, è assolutamente attuale. Prende di mira John Mitchell, attorney general - in pratica il ministro della giustizia - dell'amministrazione Nixon.
Mitchell aveva introdotto una legge che autorizzava esplicitamente la pratica poliziesca - peraltro già largamente utilizzata - del "no knock", ossia autorizzava la polizia a entrare nelle case private per perquisizioni e arresti senza bussare, senza identificarsi.
E infatti nessuno aveva bussato tre anni prima alla porta di Fred Hampton, ucciso mentre dormiva in una spedizione omicidia organizzata dall'FBI e dalla polizia di Chicago.

In his notes, Smith points out that the lyric "over the road I'm bound to go" is "seldom heard other than in songs dealing with prison." Although it is never explicitly stated in the song that the speaker is found guilty and sent to jail, it may be inferred by the constant refrain "over the road I'm bound to go." It is significant that the next three songs that follow "Feather Bed" all deal with, or make mention of, prisons or jailhouses. For this reason, the first line's comment that "colored man plumb fool about feather bed" may be intended to be ironic, given that the speaker is headed for accommodations that a far from plush.

The South (the birthplace of American chattel slavery), is clearly a beloved place for Victoria (“I love you, I won’t leave you”) but it needs to unshackle itself from confederate monuments and all the other relics of hate and oppression that exist there (horrible inequality, voter suppression, etc.) With undeniable moral clarity, Victoria beseeches us to acknowledge that things still aren’t okay for BIPOC folks even though slavery was abolished in 1865 and Jim Crow laws were legally abolished in 1965.

Stai a vedere che il disco più significativo dell'intero movimento Black Lives Matter di questo rovente 2020 rischia di arrivare da un gruppo oscuro londinese di cui sappiamo poco o niente, con zero promozione e distribuito da un'etichetta indipendente londinese.
I SAULT sono una formazione emersa dal niente lo scorso anno con due dischi sorprendenti di soul, afrobeat, funk e r&b intitolati “5” e “7”: canzoni appassionate, suoni essenziali e radicali, esecuzioni semplici e concrete.
Poche sono le testate che se ne sono occupate, ma quelle poche ne sono rimaste infatuate: Guardian, radio KEXP, il dj Gilles Peterson e Bandcamp (che ha inserito i due album al secondo posto del listone dei 100 migliori dischi del 2019). .

Un video reportage che riprende anche le scene in cui la polizia affianca e appoggia tutto il movimento di protesta, come le immagini finali del video in cui uno sceriffo guida un corteo.
Matteo lancia quindi un messaggio di unione, un invito per tutti a fare un passo indietro per lasciare da parte l'odio e avviarsi verso una umanità fatta di rispetto reciproco.

Capture The Flag
The tune captures a dark moment in US history. It deals with three enslaved black women Anarcha, Lucy, and Betsey who were experimented on by James Marion Sims. Sims is commonly referred to as the founding father of modern gynecology. The video juxtaposes footage of the band performing with flashes of images related to Sims and the enslaved women he violated.
Front women Shawna Potter made the following statement about her motives for composing the tune and making the video: “This song is about all the stories our country has buried or ignored. I wanted to memorialize Anarcha, Lucy, and Betsey in the best way I knew how, through song, and the shooting of this video just happened to coincide with tearing down a statue of J. Marion Sims, the man who experimented on them and other enslaved women.”

E' una cover metrica. E' una di quelle canzoni adatte per le improvvisazioni, da cantare in coro in qualche marcia antirazzista o contro la guerra come, per esempio, la famosa We Shall Overcome.
