Richard Moore
2023
tiny notes
Richard Moore grew up in Derry, Northern Ireland. He described his childhood as growing up in a war zone. When he was 10 years old in 1972 he was hit by a rubber bullet on his way home from school. He was blinded for life. With the help of his devoted family and community he rebuilt his life and went on to found Children in Crossfire, a charity which has for 30 years helped vulnerable young people in developing nations. In 2007 he found, befriended and forgave the soldier who fired the bullet. The Dalai Lama wrote ‘I preach forgiveness, Richard Moore lives it.’

Oh Dolours
2024
"Oh Dolours" is an ode to Dolours Price, a radical feminist and volunteer in the Irish Republican Army. It's an exploration of the sacrifices people make in the name of liberation, and what kinds of compromises are actually worth the cost — particularly for women, who face sexist double standards even in militant resistance. We recruited the singers from Indoor Friends to join us in the third verse, to make sure that women's voices were actually heard.
Ní saoirse go saoirse na mBan.
(There is no freedom until the freedom of women)

The song was written by brothers Frank & Sean O'Meara
Jim McCann, who often played with The Dubliners had the most success with it, but it was also sang by The Wolfe Tones, John McDermott, Barleycorn, and Anthony Kearns to name but a few singers. And at least also Andrea Rock & the Rebel Poets in their Ep "Mnà" (Women).
It was written about Joseph Plunket and Grace Gifford who married hours before Joseph was executed for his part in the 1916 rising in Dublin
Tom Clarke was a source of inspiration in the Post Office.
There was Joseph Plunket, pale and weak having come directly from the hospital where he had just undergone an operation.Joseph was shot seated, as he was too ill to stand for the firing squad.
He struggled to be with his comrades on that eventful morning. Margaret Skinnider said he looked like death and he met his death a few days later, not a natural one but... (continua)

(continua)

Lonely Banna Strand (the Ballad of Roger Casement)
anonimo
"Roger David Casement (1864 – 1916) was a humanitarian campaigner and an Irish patriot, poet, revolutionary, and nationalist. He was a British consul, famous for his reports and activities against human rights abuses in the Congo and Peru and also for his dealings with Germany before Ireland’s Easter Rising in 1916. An Irish nationalist and Parnellite in his youth, he worked in Africa for commercial interests and later in the service of Britain. However, the Boer War and his consular investigation into atrocities in the Congo led Casement to anti-Imperialist and, ultimately, to Irish Republican and separatist political opinions. He sought to obtain German support for a rebellion in Ireland against British rule. Shortly before the Easter Rising, he landed in Ireland and was arrested. He was subsequently convicted and executed by the British for treason. His remains were buried in the yard... (continua)

Once Upon A Time In Ireland
In these days of relative calm in the north-eastern section of Ireland the Police Service of Northern Ireland proudly claims to be ‘Making Northern Ireland Safer’. They’ll have you believe that they’ve moved on from the notorious days of the B-Specials and Royal Ulster Constabulary. The residents and Ciarán Murphy know differently and Once Upon A Time In Ireland opens with a angry blistering attack on Northern Ireland’s police force that is more punk rock than any punk song I ever heard.
Armed only with an acoustic guitar, Ciarán comes across sometimes as a one-man punk army.

Once Upon A Time In Ireland
The guitar picking on ‘You Cried for Ten Men Dead’ is simply outstanding. This track never fails to leave me in tears, as Ciaran sings to his father about the impact of Ireland’s struggle on the old man. From fighting for Great Britain in World War II, to joining a revolutionary army in Ireland, to crying for the ten hunger strikers who died in the Maze prison in 1981. The old man fell under the spell of whiskey and was unable to keep it together. Simply breathtaking.

Siobhan Fahey dichiarò all'epoca: "How ridiculous it is that eighteen year old boys are given guns and are endorsed by the government to go out and kill people.”

A Nation Once Again
"A Nation Once Again" is a song, written in the early to mid-1840s by Thomas Osborne Davis (1814–1845). Davis was a founder of Young Ireland, an Irish movement whose aim was the independence of Ireland.
Davis believed that songs could have a strong emotional impact on people. He wrote that "a song is worth a thousand harangues". He felt that music could have a particularly strong influence on Irish people at that time. He wrote: "Music is the first faculty of the Irish... we will endeavour to teach the people to sing the songs of their country that they may keep alive in their minds the love of the fatherland."
"A Nation Once Again" was first published in The Nation on 13 July 1844 and quickly became a rallying call for the growing Irish nationalist movement at that time.
The song is a prime example of the "Irish rebel music" subgenre. The song's narrator dreams of a time when Ireland... (continua)

Once Upon A Time In Ireland
This song recounts the tragedy of 15-year-old Catholic Michael McIlveen, known as ‘Mickey 'Bo’, who was cornered and beaten to death by a gang of loyalist youths in Ballymena, County Antrim in Northern Ireland on the 8th of May, 2006.
The killing revealed a divided Northern Ireland, with rampant violence between protestants and Catholics. His last killer was not apprehended until 2018.

"Sportchestra! – 101 Songs About Sport".
lyrics by Boff Whalley

The Boys Of The Old Brigade
bella canzone, nessun dubbio, ma, come già si può intuire dalle parole "From hills and farms a call to arms,Was heard by one and all", di pacifista ha poco o nulla!

Lyra McKee was an investigative journalist from Belfast. She was killed whilst observing a riot in Derry, Northern Ireland in April 2019. She was 29. In her 2017 TED talk she spoke movingly of the moment she came out to her mum. ‘Don’t tell me there’s no hope,’ she said. Her family are still campaigning for #Justice4Lyra. The first three lines are taken from the traditional song The Croppy Boy.
