Canzone con cui Steve Borrill degli Spirogyra si rivolgeva direttamente a Reginald “Reggie” Maudling che all’epoca, come ministro dell’interno del governo inglese, era pure responsabile per l’Irlanda del Nord e che è colui su cui ricade il sangue dei cittadini di Derry massacrati dai parà britannici il 30 gennaio 1972, giorno passato alla storia come “Bloody Sunday”.
Reggie dovette dimettersi alcuni mesi dopo la strage, quando il governo conservatore di Heath decise di istituire un ministero apposito per gli “affari nord-irlandesi”…
Nel 1974 fu ferito da un pacco bomba inviatogli dall’IRA…
Fu ministro degli esteri del “governo ombra” conservatore, guidato da Margaret Thatcher, durante il mandato del labourista Harold Wilson…

The British army in Northern Ireland started to use helicopters in the mid-1970's, because ambushes and snipers made ground patrols and road transport a perilous undertaking. The Provisional Irish Republican Army (pIRA) realised that it would be devastating for British morale if they could bring down a helicopter and the organisation went shopping for surface-to-air missiles, or SAM's.
Initially the Provisional Irish Republican Army (pIRA) tried to buy SAM-missiles from Central American arms dealers in the United States of America. This plan however was frustrated by the PIRA Unit, a special FBI-unit, with the arrest of Gabriel Megahey in June 1982.

This song depicts England as a caring mother who looked after her rebellious children. Regardless of their misbehaviour, she was always around to comfort and guide her impetuous bunch of kids. Eventually the juveniles reach adulthood and they surprise their mother with civilised behaviour.

On the face of it Whack Fol The Diddle is just a rather sarcastic song, but we have to wonder whether Peadar Kearney, the writer who also wrote A Soldiers Song, would agree with this assessment.
Self-mockery, sarcasm and a sense for understatement was not uncommon for Peadar Kearney. In the song The Row In The Town for example he compares the Easter Rising, in which he had participated, with a row in the town indeed. During the Civil War 77 men were executed by former comrades. This song, The Drumboe Martyrs, relates to four of them.
Together with six other men Charlie Daly, Sean Larkin, Timothy O'Sullivan and Daniel Enright formed an unit of Republicans in County Donegal. Initially they manage to hold up against the Free State forces, but soon the Republicans were forced to withdraw and hide in the mountains. Following a tip from an informer Free Staters found them and on 2 November 1922 the ten were arrested and transferred to Drumboe Castle. In January the three Kerrymen Charlie Daly, Timothy O'Sullivan and Daniel Enright, and Sean Larkin from Derry, were sentenced to death by firing squad. The sentence was carried out on 14 March 1923, thus not on the feast of Saint Patrick as mentioned in the text, on an improvised firing range and their bodies were buried at Drumboe.

The Crumlin Road Jail in Belfast, locally better known as The Crum, which is closed at the moment, has been notorious during The Troubles by British soldiers and Republicans in Northern Ireland alike.

It was also a prison with some spectacular escapes and the song Over The Wall tells the story of the so-called Kangaroo Escape which occurred in November 1971 when nine prisoners, Bernard Elliman, Eugene Fanning, Seamus Storey, Terence Clarke, Danny Mulan,Christopher Keenan, Peter Hennesey, Thomas Kane and Thomas Fox, simply climbed over the wall while the wardens watched a football match.

The Fields of Athenry is probably the best-known song about the Great Famine which raged over Ireland from 1845 until 1849.
The main character is awaiting transportation to the penal colony Botany Bay for stealing corn from a food depot. Whilst imprisoned his thoughts wander off to the abandoned fields of Athenry, a village just east of Galway Town.
Charles Trevelyan, the Permanent Secretary at the Treasury during most of the Famine years, was reluctant to hand out his corn and when the corn depots opened they mainly contained maize, or Indian corn. Due to its hard kernel the Irish were unable to process the maize.

When The Fields of Athenry was published in 1979 by Pete St. John the rumour was spread that the words already had been published in the 1880's. Evidence supporting this rumour however is never produced and St. John's claim is widely acknowledged.

The Devlin family, to which Anne Devlin was born in 1780, maintained close relations with noted nationalists such as Michael Dwyer, who was Anne's uncle, and the O'Tooles and the O'Byrnes. Due to this relations the military drew a bead on the Devlin's after the Rebellion of 1798. Anne's father, even though his involvement in the rising has yet to be established, was imprisoned in Wicklow Gaol and his family was frequently raided on account of Dwyer and O'Byrne.

After being released after two years imprisonment Devlin decided to leave their small farmstead in Cronbeg near Rathdrum, County Wicklow, to take up resident at Butterfield Lane in Rathfarnham in County Dublin.

In contrast with the overall impression the prison protests for political status in the late 1970's and early 1980's weren't limited to the H-Blocks of Her Majesty's Prison Maze, also known as the Long Kesh Detention Centre. The Armagh Women are often mistakenly forgotten.

The path for Internment was paved by activating the Special Powers Act in August 1971. The slightest suspicion was enough to put about every male behind barbed wire without too much judicial fuss, such as judges or juries. Canzone attribuita a tal Patrick Carpenter, poeta e nativo di An Sciobairín (Skibbereen), città nella contea di Cork in Irlanda.

Un figlio chiede al padre, immigrato in America dall’Irlanda, di spiegargli perché ha abbandonato la sua bella terra natale. "I'm Asking You Sergeant, Where's Mine" (also known by the shorter title "Sergeant, Where's Mine") is a folk song written and first performed in the mid-1970s by Scottish comedian, actor and singer Billy Connolly. It was later popularized by The Dubliners. Inspired by The Troubles in Northern Ireland, it is told from the point of view of a wounded soldier and makes ironic reference to British Army recruitment advertisements of the era that showed recruits having a grand time in exotic places and enjoying such activities as skiing. Nell’estate del 1937, Giorgio VI e la Regina Elisabetta, incoronati di fresco, decisero di fare una visita ufficiale in Ulster, giusto per ribadire la soggezione del nord Irlanda alla corona inglese... Ma quando, il 28 luglio, il corteo reale si recò a Belfast, i repubblicani risposero alla provocazione e “salutarono” i sovrani a modo loro: appiccarono il fuoco ai posti di dogana lungo il confine tra le contee sotto dominio inglese e l’Irlanda.

Una canzone sulla condizione dei prigionieri repubblicani nord-irlandesi detenuti negli H-Blocks del carcere speciale di Maze, più noto come Long Kesh.

Nel 1972 ai combattenti dell'IRA fu riconosciuto lo Special Category Status, cioè furono riconosciuti come prigionieri di guerra. Ma ben presto questa condizione fu revocata: nessuna differenza coi criminali comuni, obbligo di indossare la divisa carceraria e di lavoro come gli altri detenuti.
Nel 1976, Kieran Nugent fu il primo militante dell'IRA ad essere rinchiuso nei nuovi H-Blocks di Maze, e subito rifiutò di mettersi l'uniforme della prigione, rivendicando il suo status di prigioniero politico.
Così iniziò la "blanket protest" che culminò poi nel 1981 nello sciopero della fame ad oltranza che portò alla morte Bobby Sands ed altri suoi nove compagni...

Forse la più celebre canzone di Mickey MacConnell, scritta la tempo del Civil Rights movement in Ulster, quando la comunità cattolica - prima dell'escalation dello scontro violento tra IRA da una parte, esercito inglese, polizia e gruppi paramilitari protestanti dall'altra - promosse importanti iniziative non violente, come la campagna per la giustizia sociale (CSJ, Belfast 1964) e la campagna di disobbedienza civile. Fu il Bloody Sunday del 1972 a mettere di fatto in crisi l'approccio non violento alla soluzione del conflitto e a sprofondare l'Irlanda del Nord in un quarto di secolo di efferata violenza.

Il testo è basato su di un episodio realmente accaduto nel 1974, quando un amico di Sands, tale Allan Bell, di fede protestante, fu ucciso vicino a Newry. Poco dopo si scatenò la vendetta dei protestanti, che uccisero a caso un cattolico, tale Sean O'Malley... O'Malley era un caro amico sia di Bell che di Sands.

Una canzone scritta quando in Irlanda del Nord, a metà degli anni '90, cominciò a profilarsi la speranza nella fine del conflitto e iniziarono i negoziati che poi sfociarono nell'Accordo del Venerdì Santo del 1998.

Nelle note presenti sul disco Tommy Sands ricorda anche la figura del violoncellista bosniaco Vedran Smailović che nel 1992, durante l'assedio di Sarajevo, incurante dei bombardamenti e dei cecchini, per 22 giorni suonò per strada, in pieno giorno, l'"Adagio in sol minore" di Tommaso Albinoni per onorare la memoria di 22 civili uccisi mentre facevano la coda per ricevere la razione di pane... A un giornalista che gli chiedeva se fosse pazzo a suonare sotto i bombardamenti serbi lui rispose: "Perchè non chiedi a quella gente lassù, sulle montagne, se non è pazza a bombardare Sarajevo mentre Smailović suona il suo violoncello?"

Parole e musica di Roy Harper, classe 1941, folksinger e songwriter inglese, di Manchester, con 50 anni di carriera alle spalle e non meno di 23 album in studio realizzati dal 1964 ad oggi.

In copertina il calco del viso dell’autore, la sua “death mask”, immagine significativa perché in quel periodo Roy Harper rischiò la pelle per via di una brutta sindrome che l’aveva colpito. Non a caso il secondo lato dell’LP è interamente occupato da un brano in cinque movimenti che s’intitola “The Lord's Prayer”

Una canzone dedicata al conflitto nord-irlandese, che nel 1972 e 1973 raggiunse l’apice della violenza, soprattutto in conseguenza del Bloody Sunday (30 gennaio 1972), la strage voluta dagli inglesi che chiuse di fatto ogni spazio residuo alla lotta non violenta nell’Ulster.
