Primo singolo estratto dall'album di prossima pubblicazione "The War to End All Wars", un concept sulla Prima guerra mondiale.
Nel Natale del 1914 ci furono varie tregue non autorizzate , i soldati dei due fonti fraternizzarono , cantarono , parteciparono a funzioni religiose comuni , giocarono a calcio.

Christmas Truce was our highest priority when we decided to write songs about World War One. Not only was it the most requested topic from our fans, but it was, for us, the most emotional story from the war. This song took us years to create since we wanted the music to reflect the mood honestly and it was a big challenge, but we feel we managed to write a song that captures the spirit of this day, over a century ago.

Una storia vera che racconta la vicenda trascorsa sul fronte di guerra la notte di natale dell'anno 1914/1915 tra italiani e austriaci. La scena si svolge sul monte Col del Rosso, nei pressi del Monte Grappa: gli italiani uscirono in pattuglia e, quando si trovarono alle spalle il nemico, si rassegnarono ormai alla tragedia, ma per miracolo gli austriaci decisero di lasciare le armi e scambiare con gli italiani il segno di PACE.

In Nov/Dec 1997 I released three tracks on a single, in advance of an album I was recording at the time, to avail of the Christmas market. One of these tracks was a song titled A Silent Night Christmas 1915. The song had been acquired by my producer, P.J. Curtis, from its author Cormac MacConnell. The album is called The Dimming of the Day ( CMCD 001 ) and was released in the spring of ’98.A Silent Night Christmas 1915 tells the story of the remarkable fraternisation which took place at various places along the Western Front in 1914 and to a lesser degree in 1915. Similar events occurred on the Eastern Front on the banks of the river Angerap in East Prussia to name but one.

Nella Prima Guerra Mondiale nei giorni di Natale del Dicembre 1914 nelle trincee accadde un evento straordinario, nato dalla spontaneità dei soldati: britannici, francesi e tedeschi si scambiarono gli auguri e dei piccoli doni.
La vigilia di Natale e il giorno di Natale in molti punti del fronte occidentale entrò in vigore un tacito "cessate il fuoco" i soldati uscirono dalle rispettive trincee per incontrarsi nella striscia di terra tra i due eserciti a fraternizzare, celebrare comuni cerimonie religiose, scambiarsi il cibo e divertirsi con una partita di calcio (amichevole). In alcuni punti la tregua venne limitata alla sepoltura dei rispettivi caduti, in altri schieramenti invece si continuò a combattere.
Impossibile passare alle armi i soldati che avevano fraternizzato, bollati come "disertori, traditori della patria", l'alto comando preferì trasferire le truppe e deferire gli ufficiali,... (continua)

"Cornamuse di pace" - tratta dall'omonimo album del 1983, questa hit era l'appello di Sir Paul per l'armonia del mondo. Il videoclip mostrava la Tregua di Natale del 1914 con le storie parallele di un soldato inglese e tedesco (entrambi interpretati da Paul) che si incontrano nella terra di nessuno, si scambiano le foto delle famiglie e giocano una partita di calcio. Lo scoppio di una bomba li costringe a tornare nelle rispettive trincee, dove si accorgono di avere ancora ognuno la foto dell'altro.

È un collage di foto, in gran parte delle manifestazioni svoltesi in tutto il mondo il 15 febbraio 2003 contro le minacce di guerra in Iraq. Poco più di un mese dopo, il 20 marzo, sarebbero cominciati i bombardamenti.

E’ stato finalmente confermato documentalmente che la “Tregua di Natale del 1914” non fu l’unico episodio. Anche l’anno successivo accadde una cosa analoga nelle trincee intorno a Laventie, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, dove si fronteggiavano tedeschi ed inglesi
Nick Bourne della BBC News racconta che la conferma è avvenuta dalla lettura del diario di un soldato inglese dei Royal Welsh Fusiliers, Robert Keating, poi purtroppo caduto in battaglia nell’estate del 1916.
Keating scriveva - così avvalorando altre testimonianze orali finora considerate inattendibili - che “la mattina di Natale, dopo colazione, urlammo i nostri auguri ai tedeschi...” e continua “dopo aver lasciato i tedeschi, uno dei loro ufficiali disse ad uno dei nostri che loro per i prossimi due giorni non avrebbero sparato, se noi... Il seguito di Snoopy vs. The Red Baron, la canzone racconta di Snoopy che la vigilia di Natale va a combattere contro il Barone Rosso. Dopo una lunga battaglia il Barone Rosso ha finalmente Snoopy sotto tiro, ma invece di sparare constringe Snoopy ad atterrare e i due brindano insieme. Alla fine i due si salutano e vanno ognuno per la sua strada, pur sapendo che "un giorno si riincontreranno". La canzone fa ovviamente riferimento alla Tregua di Natale del 1914.

On one Christmas day during World War 1 both sides put down their guns and met in No-Mans land. They shook hands and shared cigarettes and stories and played a game of football… The WW1 was a brutal bloody battle of dying empires that saw millions perish. And yet on one historic day two sides who had been locked in desperate fighting ceased their guns and met in no-mans land where they realised that they weren't German, or English, or anything like that. They realised that they were just men. All the same. And the war, and perhaps all wars could have ceased on that day with this monumental realisation, if the commanders had not ordered the men back into the trenches, threatening that if they did not go back to shooting each other, they would be shot themselves.... The Christmas Truce of 1914 on the Western and Eastern Fronts may well represent the last time that the face of humanity would been seen in what was rapidly becoming the ultimate nightmare of the industrial revolution. The concept of total war would soon replace any outdated notion of chivalry.
Originally incorporated as part of the 1996 Christmas theme on the main page, John's lyrics from this 1984 song capture the spirit of that Christmas so many years ago. I thought it best to leave it up for year 'round access, lest we forget its message.
