Le ragioni storiche del conflitto risalgono alla prima metà del diciannovesimo secolo, quando l’impero russo mise in atto un processo di cristianizzazione del Caucaso meridionale, dopo la sconfitta della Persia e il conseguente trattato di pace di Turkmenchay (1828), trasferendo in maniera coatta 50.000 armeni provenienti dalla Persia nella regione, in particolare nei khanati azeri di Karabakh e Erevan.
A questa ondata migratoria seguirono altri flussi migratori favoriti dal governo russo, che cambiarono definitivamente gli equilibri demografici dell’area, con scontri su base etnica nel 1905 e nel 1919, prodromici al conflitto del Nagorny Karabakh iniziato nel 1988.
