I loved "Imagine" from the beginning, even though I thought it was about communism. After spending 80+ days at the Terri Schiavo protest (the biggest event of my life) and learning how evil my world has become...I now believe our brother John's song is our blueprint for the Kingdom of Heaven. Is this why he was martyred? Never stop singing it... Never stop saying "I love you"

Es la mejor canción del mundo, es la respuesta a encontrar nuestra verdadera paz, es el unico camino ha seguir para ser mejores hombres, mujere y niños. Solo Imaginen si pudiera ser cierto.
If ever there was an anthem for the socialist cause, it is IMAGINE, one of the best pop songs ever written. Expresses the deep-seeded wants of all people on earth--to create heaven on earth, without greed or poverty or war and discarding the things that cause these things.
For those who do not consider it a political song, I disagree and add a point: it is an incredibly Christian song.
For those who are calling Lennon a communist, you are probably right. But so frikkin what? More than being a socialist or even anti-American song, this is an incredibly HUMAN song. And there aren't a whole lot of them in this world.

Interessante rileggere a distanza di tanti anni una polemica che oppose i due grandi amici-rivali John Lennon e Paul McCartney sulle pagine di Melody Maker nel novembre 1971. Il giornale pubblicò prima una lunga intervista a Paul in cui l'ex Beatle scriveva, fra l'altro:
"John's whole image now is very honest and open. He's alright, is John. I like his 'Imagine' album but I didn't like the others. 'Imagine' is what John is really like but there was too much political stuff on the other albums. You know, I only really listen to them to see if there's something I can pinch." (laughs)

Chissà se, oggi, la famosa sindaca legaiola di Cascina (Pisa), avrà fatto abbrunare le bandiere in comune per l'anniversario di questa bieca canzone comunista, che John Lennon -come si sa- in realtà tradusse dal nord-coreano con venature cubane (linguaggio che ha, almeno così dicono, decise affinità col pisano di campagna). Oh, pero' Lennon aveva ragione: è una canzone anti-religiosa, anti-nazionalista, anti-convenzionale e anti-capitalista, ma solo perché è zuccherosa piace a tutti, persino a Paul McCartney.... L'unica che non è riuscito a fregare è la leghista di Cascina. Son furbi eh 'sti pisani.

De André e Piovani non erano gli unici a "trarre ispirazione" dalla tradizione inglese (come faceva notare Flavio Poltronieri), infatti questa celebre canzone di John Lennon riprende la melodia della ballad Skewball (o Stewball), in particolare nella interpretazione di Peter, Paul and Mary.
Come è noto, John Lennon intendeva scrivere una canzone pacifista, il cui testo invitasse tutti i popoli della terra a superare le controversie e, prendendo spunto dal messaggio natalizio, decidessero di cessare per sempre ogni ostilità. Purtroppo, come spesso avviene, il messaggio è stato ignorato e la suadente melodia è stata presa dal vorticoso business che ruota intorno al Natale, per farne un potente mezzo di spinta al consumo.
Il brano è così diventato uno dei più conosciuti Auguri Natalizi, la colonna sonora più usata durante lo scambio dei regali, ma nessuno ormai più fa caso alle parole del testo
A parte l'inutilità di tutti questi commenti sulla religione, John Lennon non era affatto ateo.
