When Roy Harper wrote these words he was attacking all the things about the society he was spawned from that he found detestable. He was in effect taking on the brunt of the establishment. Who would have thought that it would take forty years for it to come and bite him on the bum.
The young Roy Harper was vitriolic in his attack on what the pervading culture of the ‘White Man’ was doing around the world with its creed of selfishness, exploitation and greed.

La canzone parla delle torture e della morte che l’uomo infligge agli animali, che sia la vivisezione, la sperimentazione su cavie, gatti, cani, scimmie di cosmetici, farmaci, tecniche chirurgiche e quant’altro serva al “progresso” dell’umanità, cioè al Mercato (penso alla vicenda dei beagles del laboratorio Green Hill, a giudizio in appello in questi giorni…), o che sia un canile illegale, di quelli che sempre più frequentemente vengono scoperti, anche qui da noi, veri e propri campi di sterminio o di addestramento di cani destinati ai combattimenti illegali…

Qualcosa sull’album da cui il brano è tratto, “Once” del 1990, che include anche la controversa e profetica The Black Cloud Of Islam, canzone “abbandonata” anch’essa e su cui meriterà senz’altro ritornare.

Album: "Death or Glory?"

Cari amici,
a cominciare da questa, vi invio alcune canzoni di un grande assente dal sito: ROY HARPER!
Come mai non c’è neanche una sua canzone qui dentro?
Non vi piace? L’avete dimenticato? Non lo conoscete? Io l’ho scoperto solo quest’estate, sebbene siano quasi 40 anni che ascolto il 3° dei Led Zeppelin, dove c’è “Hats off to (Roy) Harper” dedicata a lui e più di 30 che lo sento cantare “Have a cigar” in Wish you were here dei Pink Floyd. Insomma, una mia enorme lacuna, perché è sicuramente un grandissimo, anche se mi piacciono di più i suoi primi dischi e un po’ meno quegli degli anni ’80.

Ma per farmelo piacere, basta leggere quello che dice di lui la mia Enciclopedia del Rock:
