Non é una canzone che associamo subito alle AWS, specialmente conoscendone altre ben più ovvie da parte di Springsteen. Tuttavia Born to Run é forse una delle prime in cui Bruce parla della dura vita nelle strade e quartieri della vita operaia e proletaria statunitense degli anni '60-'70.

The Wall
”The Wall” is something I’d played on stage a few times and remains very close to my heart. The title and idea were Joe Grushecky’s, then the song appeared after Patti and I made a visit to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington. It was inspired by my memories of Walter Cichon. Walter was one of the great early Jersey Shore rockers, who along with his brother Ray (one of my early guitar mentors) led the ”Motifs”. The Motifs were a local rock band who were always a head above everybody else. Raw, sexy and rebellious, they were the heroes you aspired to be. But these were heroes you could touch, speak to, and go to with your musical inquiries. Cool, but always accessible, they were an inspiration to me, and many young working musicians in 1960′s central New Jersey. Though my character in “The Wall” is a Marine, Walter was actually in the Army, A Company, 3rd Battalion, 8th Infantry.... (continua)

He was a quiet, soft-spoken guy who wore dark clothes and pointy-toe boots, and had shoulder-length hair before it was in fashion.
He liked listening to The Animals, The Kinks and The Rolling Stones, but never tried to be a guitar god. Instead, the only instrument he really played was a tambourine. When he got up on stage and began to sing, people saw something special in Walter Cichon.
"He wasn't just a singer, he was a front man. He was a character, a personality," said "Stormin' "Norman Seldin. "This guy had a magnetism about him." Cichon was the lead singer for The Motifs, the Shore-area's first "hot" rock 'n' roll band. His older brother, Raymond, was the lead guitar player, and Seldin was the group's teen-age manager.

High Hopes
The above lyrics are for a Springsteen's studio version of HIGH HOPES recorded in 1995. It was first released on the Blood Brothers promo EP in 1996.

In 1994, Bruce Springsteen recorded an unreleased album with Shane Fontayne and other members of the 1992-1993 touring band. Springsteen's manager Jon Landau wasn't a fan of the project (the 1994 album), and recommended shelving it and focusing more on a "career overview"; this lead to the Greatest Hits sessions with the E Street Band in early 1995.
Springsteen called the band in early January 1995, and they assembled for the recording sessions on 09 Jan 1995 at the Hit Factory in New York City, NY. This was their first studio reunion in 11 years (since the Born In The USA sessions) and their first ever with Nils Lofgren. HIGH HOPES was among the songs recorded during these sessions. Being a cover, it is not surprising that the song was not included on the Greatest Hits album.

Quando avevo sentito questa canzone sul disco mi era piaciuta e basta. Averla sentita in concerto con quell'assolo di tromba sotto la pioggia... mamma mia, i brividi.

Scopro sul sempre ottimo Mudcat Café che il Boss potrebbe qui aver tratto ispirazione da una ballata ottocentesca inglese intitolata proprio Jack of All Trades e della quale esistono numerose versioni con localizzazioni diverse: Londra, Dublino, Birmingham, Nottingham, ecc…
Una versione che vorrei qui proporre è quella scritta da John Hasted (1921-2002, un fisico atomico con la passione per le folksong) e incisa da Ewan MacColl con The Critics Group nel loro disco del 1967 intitolato “Sweet Thames Flow Softly”. Poi anche da Leon Rosselson e Roy Bailey in “Songs of Life from a Dying British Empire” del 1981. La melodia è quella di una canzone di strada irlandese, “Dublin Jack of All Trades”, per l’appunto.
La propongo come contributo “filologico” al brano di Bruce Springsteen e anche per gli ultimi versi: “Sono uno che ha girato dappertutto ed ha imparato ogni mestiere. E se... (continua)

Credo che non occorra essere fan sfegatati del Boss per comprendere che è una delle favole più belle della storia del rock.

Mi piacerebbe far leggere questa traduzione finto romanesca a una simpatica coppia di romani che avevo accanto al famoso concerto di Springsteen. Con lui che spiegava che la musica era una cosa graduale, e che per arrivare ai Pink Floyd si doveva passare per Claudio Lolli. "Ma Claudio Lolli lo ascolta mi' padre" replicava un ragazzino, anche lui romano, senza pensare che infatti il signore poteva benissimo essere suo padre. "Ma Claudio Lolli è IMPRESCINDIBILE... ahò li zingari felici è un CAPOLAVORO". (Applausi).
Altro siparietto quando il ragazzo spiegava che voleva andare a Londra a fare il pizzaiolo, ma poi aveva trovato lavoro sempre come pizzaiolo a Roma e aveva deciso di rimanere nella sua città. "Sì, ma er patriomonio linguistico dove lo metti?" "Eh il patrimonio linguistico... er romanesco!".
Ok non c'entra nulla con la canzone ma mi han fatto molto ridere.

Una delle primissime canzoni scritte da Springsteen e eseguita con il suo primo gruppo, gli Steel Mill, nell'agosto 1970. Recentemente il manoscritto originale è stato esposto nella collezione Springsteen Archives. Springsteen ha ricordato "è una canzone contro la guerra che ho scritto quando avevo 18 o 19 anni.".
This comes from the late ’60s and represents the oldest handwritten lyrics in the Archives’ collection. According to the website, the song was performed by Springsteen’s band Steel Mill in Richmond, Va., in August 1970, “and perhaps at a few other locations during that time.”
The song is written from the point of view of a scared soldier (“sometimes I wake up screaming”) who just wants to go home again.
