Now - more than ever, it's time to create peace. I wrote this song because I was impressed by the number of "Peace Poles" that I saw as I toured all around the world. No matter what our governments say... the world is filled with people who say no to war and YES to peace.
From an Interview with DARIA about the song, "Assalam Aleykum"
While teaching in the Middle East, I had a candid discussion with a group of Arabic women who were hosting my visit. In the conversation they shared a variety of very ugly statements made directly to them that showed how extreme prejudice was part of their everyday life. Hearing these statements, crystallized my sense that – as musicians and educators - we must work harder in every culture and every location for children who understand the value and dignity of all peoples. Prejudice and intolerance are not natural but are taught and; as educators, we can expose our children to world cultures in a way that creates little global citizens and a world of greater dignity and peace."
This song was inspired by children who wanted to put their ideas of helping the Earth into a song. The songwriter, DARIA, used the tune “He’s Got The Whole World In His Hands” and crafted their ideas into the lyrics. Since that time, the song has been used in almost 2 dozen countries around the world as an Earth Day anthem.
Since folk songs are always growing and changing, feel free to make up your own verses when singing this song. The recorded version of the song can be found on DARIA’s JADDA JADDA JING JING JING CD.
We’ve got the whole world, in our hands (continua)
This song came from a dream and has resonated in countries all over the world. It has been used in and anti-apartheid curriculum in South Africa, in a “Teaching Tolerance” curriculum in the USA and in a “Respecting Others” pre-school curriculum in Australia. In 2014, a book featuring images of multicultural and mixed race children was published using Beautiful Rainbow World as the text.
This song appears on Beautiful Rainbow World CD.
“For All The World’s Children” is a song and a prayer. It’s the wish that each child can grow up in a world that respects them and givens them the opportunity to blossom and grow, no matter where they are born, how they are born or what their life circumstances are.
Dr. Martin Luther King had such a wonderful vision for a new world - A world of respect and dignity for all people. If we share these ideas – we can truly all be “kings”.
