[RV]

This is a poem by the great Karin Boye, published 1927 in the poem collection Härdarna (“The Hearths”). Karin Boye is no new entry in this website: she's the author of De dödsdömda, the poem on Sacco and Vanzetti (from the same collection Härdarna) set to music and sung by Jan Hammarlund (both in Swedish and Italian, a “four-hand translation” made by the Swedish folksinger and myself in a Florence milk bar). The libertarian poetess from Gothemburg, who took her life at the age of 41 -the same year when also Virginia Woolf and Marina Tsvetayeva committed suicide- is well known for her dystopic novel Kallocain, considered by many as a forerunner of Orwell's 1984, published in 1940, the year before her death. Jan Hammarlund has recently set to music and sung this poem, too, in the album Vid Kajen (2016). [RV]
Rustad, rak och pansarsluten
gick jag fram –
men av skräck var brynjan gjuten
och av skam.

Jag vill kasta mina vapen,
svärd och sköld.
All den hårda fiendskapen
var min köld.

Jag har sett de torra fröna
gro till slut.
Jag har sett det ljusa gröna
vecklas ut.

Mäktigt är det späda livet
mer än järn,
fram ur jordens hjärta drivet
utan värn.

Våren gryr i vinterns trakter
där jag frös.
Jag vill möta livets makter
vapenlös.

Nota. [RV]
DISARMATA

Armata, eretta e corazzata
io avanzavo -
ma la cotta era forgiata di terrore
e di vergogna.

Voglio gettar via le mie armi,
spada e scudo.
Tutta quella dura ostilità
mi raggelava.

Ho visto i semi seccati
crescere, alfine.
Ho visto spargersi il verde
luminoso.

Più possente del ferro
è la tenerezza della vita
che dal cuore della terra
spunta indifesa.

Nelle plaghe dell'inverno
dove io gelavo
sorge già la primavera,
vi sorge e cresce.

Al potere ed alle forze
della vita
io voglio andare incontro
disarmata.

vapenloes
I WANT TO MEET...

Armed, erect and and closed in armour
forth I came -
but of terror was the mail-coat cast,
and of shame.

I want to drop my weapons,
sword and shield.
All that hard hostility
made me cold.

I have seen the dry seeds
grow at last.
I have seen the bright green
spread out fast.

Mightier than iron
is life's tenderness,
driven forth from the earth's heart
without defence.

The spring dawns in winter's regions.
where I froze.
I want to meet life's powers
weaponless.

I WANT TO MEET...

Armed, upright and shielded in armour
I went forth -
but from fear was the coat of mail cast
and from shame.

I want to throw down my weapons,
sword and shield.
All the stark hostility
was my coldness.

I have seen the dry seeds
finally grow.
I have seen the light green
unfurl.

Mighty is the tenderness of life
stronger than iron,
driven out of the heart of the Earth
defenceless.

Spring dawns in winter regions,
where I froze.
I want to meet the forces of life
weaponless.

I WANT TO MEET...

As a knight in shining armour
forth I came -
but in fear my heart was clad,
my helmet cast in shame.

Now I curse my weapons,
sword and shield.
My anger and hostility,
my coldness now must yield.

I have seen the dry seeds
come alive.
I have seen the May Queen's deeds
make all the world thrive.

Such strength in this frail life,
beyond that of steel;
drawn from earth's core,
barely sheltered, in its peel.

Spring! Resolve the winter's knife;
the frost that left me harmed.
I will embrace the gifts of life
unarmed.

WAFFENLOS

Kampfbereit und zugeschlossen
einst ich kam-
Panzer war aus Schreck gegossen
und aus Scham.

Ich will abtun meine Waffen,
Schild und Schwert.
Feindschaft kann nichts Gutes schaffen,
Kälte zehrt.

Ich sah manchen trocknen Samen
noch erblühn,
sah, wie Zweige aus ihm kamen,
licht und grün.

Kraftvoll ist das zarte Leben,
mehr als Stahl,
allem schutzlos preisgegeben
ohne Wahl.

Frühling tagt in Winternächten,
Mutterschoß-
Ich will ringen mit den Mächten
waffenlos.
