(Virginia Niri)

The lyrics, by one of the most oustanding Italian folk and protet singers, are inspired (and partially taken) from a letter written by Chaim, a 14 years old Jewish boy from Galicia (Poland) who was deported to the Pustków concentration camp. Chaim died there in 1944.
The boy wrote a letter to his parents, in his native Yiddish, and managed to throw it outside the barbed wire of the camp; a peasant found it accidentally and kept it until liberation.

"Se il cielo fosse bianco di carta..." è un'espressione derivante dal Talmud.
In ebraico, il nome Chaìm significa "vita"[

"If all the Heavens were paper..." is an expression coming from the Talmud. The name Chaim [חיים] means "life" in Hebrew.

PUSTKOW (POLAND) CAMP

Pustków is a small village located in the south-east of Poland. Originally, the german occupation administration had planned to build there a huge SS training camp, including shops and military installations. In order to do build a first work camp, 15 villages were evacuated by force and burned. The first prisoners arrived in 1940, most of them were jews coming from every regions of Poland. Due to the terrible conditions of life in this first camp, most of these prisoners died in the next months. The survivors were executed.

In 1941, the german forces built a camp for the russian prisoners of war. The camp had no barrack or building so the russian prisoners had to sleep on the ground without any protection. There was no food distribution and, in order to prevent any escape, the prisoners were forced to remove their uniforms. During the winter 1941-1942 (one of the rudest winter ever seen in Europe), these prisoners stayed outside, without any place to sleep and only wearing underwears. It is proved that many prisoners were eating grass or roots in order to survive. Most of these prisoners died during the winter and the survivors were executed.

In september 1942, the nazi administration built a third camp dedicated for the Polish workers. The conditions of life in this last camp were the same than in the two others. These prisoners were forced to work on the development of the rocket V2.

In spite of the terror regime created by the german occupation administration, a Polish partisan organisation succed to do an incredible action: the capture of an intact V2 rocket. This rocket had been launched for a test flight. The test failed and the rocked falled but didn't exploded. The Polish partisans succeed to retrieve the rocket intact, to transfer it secretly to Warsaw and to evacuate the rocket to London by an English plane.

In the beginning of augustus 1944, the three camps were totaly evacuated and destroyed. All the survivors were transfered to other camps. The total amount of victims of Pustków is unknown, but there were probably more than 15.000 people killed in this place.
Se il cielo fosse bianco di carta
e tutti i mari neri d'inchiostro
non saprei dire a voi, miei cari,
quanta tristezza ho in fondo al cuore,
qual è il pianto, qual è il dolore
intorno a me.

Si sveglia l'alba nel livore
di noi sparsi per la foresta,
a tagliar legna seminudi,
coi piedi torti e sanguinanti;
ci hanno preso scarpe e mantelli,
dormiamo in terra.

Quasi ogni notte, come un rito,
ci danno la sveglia a bastonate;
Franz ride e lancia una carota
e noi, come larve affamate,
ci si contende unghie e denti
l'ultima foglia.

a tutti voi, genitori cari,
fratelli e amici,
vi saluto e piango.

Chaìm.

IF ALL THE HEAVENS WERE PAPER

If all the Heavens were paper
and all the seas of the world were ink
I could not tell you, my dear parents,
how much deep sadness I got in my heart.
How many tears, how much pain
I see around me.

We rise up at livid daybreak
then they drive us to the woodland
to cut wood, ragged and half-naked,
with our feet crooked and bleeding;
they took our shoes and coats away,
we sleep on the bare floor.

Almost every night, like a ritual,
they come and beat us with wooden clubs;
Franz laughs and throws us a carrot
and we, like hungry grubs
fight with teeth and nails
even for the last leaf.

Two boys have escaped:
so we were ordered to form a square.
Then they shot one dead every five,
but even if I was no fifth in order
there’s no future for me in this camp,
and I cannot live.

I bid you farewell
to all of you, my beloved parents,
brothers and friends.
I greet you and weep.

Chaim.

Version française - SI LE CIEL ÉTAIT DE PAPIER BLANC – Marco Valdo M.I. – 2010

Avec nos pieds tordus et ensanglantés;
Ils nous ont pris chaussures et manteaux,
Nous dormons à terre.

Presque chaque nuit, comme un rite,
Ils nous réveillent à coups de bâton;

LA LETTERA DI CHAIM - ITALIANO

Miei cari genitori,

Dico addio a tutti e piango.

Chaìm.

CHAIM'S LETTER - ENGLISH

Aged 14. Son of a farmer from Galicia (Poland). He was taken in a pogrom and deported together with thousands of young Jews to a camp in Pustkow, where he was murdered. His letter, cast outside the barbed wire fence, was found by a peasant and then given to the boy’s family.

My dear parents;

If all the heavens were paper and all the seas of the world were ink, I could not describe to my suffering to you and all that I see around me.

The camp is in a clearing. They drive us to work in the forest at daybreak. My feet are bleeding because they took my shoes away. We work all through the day with almost nothing to eat and at night we sleep on the bare floor (they took our coats away too).

Every night drunken soldiers come and beat us with wooden clubs and my body is black with scabs and bruises. It looks like a piece of charred wood. Sometimes they throw us a few raw carrots or a turnip and it's terrible: everyone starts fighting to try and get just the tiniest piece or one of the leaves. The day before yesterday two boys escaped so they lined us up and shot every fifth person in the row. I wasn't the fifth but I know I won't get out of here alive.

I bid farewell to you all, dear Mama, dear Papa, dear brothers and sisters, and I am crying ...

Chaim.

LA LETTRE DE CHAÏM - FRANÇAIS

Pologne, 14 ans, fils de paysans.

Mes cher parents!

14 Jahre, Bauernsohn, geboren in Galizien.

Dragi moji roditelji,

Svima vam kažem, ostajte mi zdravo i plačite.

Hajim.

Chaim.

DE BRIEF VAN CHAIM - NEDERLANDS
Vertaling: Walter R. Wybrands - Fondazione IncontriEuropei

14 jaar, boerenzoon, geboren in Galicië.

Guerra, nazifascismo, collaborazionismo, resistenza (Armando Editore) tende a considerarla "spontanea e autentica".
