Meir Ariel visse la Guerra dei sei giorni da protagonista, fu paracadutista della 55^ Brigata e partecipò alla conquista di Gerusalemme il 7 Giugno 1967. Da anticonformista qual era volle scrivere la canzone contrapponendola a Gerusalemme d’oro per mettere in risalto gli aspetti oscuri della guerra. Fu polemica accesa con Naomi Shemer
Alle parole oro /Zahav [זהב] , rame / Nechoshet [ נכושת] , luce /Or [אור ] nella canzone di Shemer , Meir Ariel in Gerusalemme di ferro contrappone ferro / Barzel [ברזל] /, piombo / Oferet [עופרת], oscurità / Shchor [שחור].
Dopo avere vissuto due anni negli Usa, Meir Ariel tornò in Israele. Combatté nella guerra dello Yom Kippur inquadrato nel 416° Battaglione della 247^ Brigata Paracadustisti che attraversò il canale di Suez il 16 Ottobre 1973. Continuò a comporre. Tra le sue canzoni un’altra che ebbe grande risonanza fu Laila Shaket Avar Al Kochothenu BaSuetz [לילה שקט עבר על כוחותינו בסואץ]/ Una notte quieta trascorsa sulle nostre truppe a Suez.
