LA GAP | The GAP [1] |
| When the GAP come, They send no letter or note, They don’t knock at the door And you’re already dead, The people sentenced you. |
| Caproni’s superintendent Was coming by taxi on January 2, With his personal bodyguards Of the Ettore Muti legion, We were there to execute him. |
Quel traditor, d’accordo con i tedeschi stava A smantellar la fabbrica, le macchine spediva Tutte in Germania dai Krupp. | That traitor was dismantling the factory in accordance With the Germans, and he was shipping to Germany All the machines to Krupp. |
E per salvar le macchine Han fatto sciopero general, Il caporeparto Trezzini [3] Ed altri sette operai Li han messi a San Vittor. | To save the machines A general strike was proclaimed, Foreman Trezzini And other seven workers Were sent to San Vittore jail. |
| The superintendent snitched on them, But he will pay for all this. He always keeps an eye on us, So, poor foreman Trezzini And the others were shot. |
| And now it’s his turn, the GAP are waiting for him By a stop when the traffic lights are red as blood, And they start shooting on him. |
| Giovanni Pesce’s shooting, but first he shouts at him: “In the name of my people I’m doing this and I kill you With both your bodyguards!” |
In fabbrica fanno retate, Torturano gente, non parla nessun E trenta operai deportati Li chiudono nei vagoni Piombati diretti a Dachau. | They’re doing roundups in the factory, People are tortured but nobody speaks. Thirty workers were deported, They locked them into sealed Boxcars bound for Dachau. |
| Recited: “On 23 April, the German go there and mine the factory, they prefer the factory blows up before they leave rather than leave it in the hands of the liberators...” |
| But the workers are fighting, they defend their factory And save the machines that give them their daily bread, And a lot of them are killed. |
| And now that we are free, The master is back to his place, There’s a new superintendent, But now he’s a partisan, Battisti Brigade, Action Party. |
| But, on the first strike, a lot of workers have been fired: Well, the news superintendent chased away the reds Who saved the factory. |
| I wonder what did this war Of liberation liberate us from? The superintendent, the masters And the chiefs are all democratic, But first they fired us, And then they shot on us, They put us into jail, But so, for all us workers Liberation is still to be achieved. |
| But so, for all us workers Liberation is still to be achieved. |
| But so, for all us workers Liberation is still to be achieved. |
[1] GAP: Gruppi di Azione Patriottica (Patriotic Action Groups). The abbreviation has been left in Italian in the translation, but Italians tend to take all abbreviations for feminine singular nouns: “La GAP”. Being formally a (masculine) plural, we have treated the word as a plural in English. |
