Cypress Grove Blues - Skip James - 1930
I would rather be buried in some cypress grove
I would rather be buried in some cypress grove
To have some woman, Lord, that I can't control
And I'm goin' away now, I'm goin' away to stay
And I'm goin' away now, I'm goin' away to stay
That'll be all right, pretty mama, you gonna need my help someday
And the sun goin' down, and you know what your promise means
And the sun goin' down, you know what your promise means
And what's the matter, baby, I can't see
I would rather be dead and six feet in my grave
I would rather be dead and six feet in my grave
Than to be way up here, honey, treated this a-way
And the old people told me, baby, but I never did know
The old people told me, baby woman, but I never did know
"The good book declare you got to reap just what you sow"
When your knee bone's achin' and your body cold
When your knee bone's achin' and your body cold
Means you just gettin' ready, honey, for the cypress grove

A seguire la trascrizione della versione di Cypress Grove Blues di Skip James a Newport nel 1964 pubblicata da The Mudcat Cafe' e relativo video.

The Mudcat Cafe'
Subject: RE: ADD: Cypress Grove (Skip James)
From: cnd - Date: 26 Feb 25
Here's a link to the 1964 Newport Folk Festival recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SxKQ2TFEUGA
Below is how I hear it. "Black cloud" line is a bit questionable -- I thought "backslider" at first, but it's not quite right. Same with the final line, but it's pretty garbled.
ADD: Cypress Grove (Skip James)

Cypress Grove Blues
I would rather be buried in some old cypress grove
I would rather be buried in some old cypress grove
Than to have a contrary woman, Lord, that I never can control
When your knee bone gets to aching and your body's getting cold
When your knee bone gets to aching and your body's getting cold
Don't you know you're just getting ready for some old cypress grove
Yonder a church bell is a-tolling and the hearse is driving slow
And a church bell is tolling, hearses is driving slow
You know, somebody's getting ready for the cypress grove
And my momma, she told me when I was 12 years old
My momma, she told me when I was 12 years old
Son, you ain't gonna be nothing but a black cloud, oh, I pray the good Lord to save your soul
And I'm going away, baby, going away to stay
And I'm going away, going away to stay
If I happen to get lucky, I may be back home some rainy day
I'm gonna sing this song and then I ain't gonna sing no more
I'm gonna sing this song and I ain't gonna sing no more
Because she pushes and there'll come a time, baby, and your husband, he can just -- I just got to go
I would rather be buried in some old cypress grove
I would rather be buried in some old cypress grove
Than to have a contrary woman, Lord, that I never can control
When your knee bone gets to aching and your body's getting cold
When your knee bone gets to aching and your body's getting cold

Negli anni '60 Skip James ha ri-registrato
"Cypress Grove Blues" con una nuova strofa che rende questo Blues ancor piu' meritevole, sec. me , di essere pubblicato come una AWS.
Pluck.
Cypress Grove Blues.
"Yes, I'm goin' away
Honey, don't you want to go?
Yes, I'm goin' away
Honey, don't you want to go?
I'm scared to go back down south
Them people goin' kill me, sure ".
