We Didn't Learn

"Due to the many conflicts in the world right now, I asked myself the question: what if no one would go to war, but everyone would rather stay with their loved ones? I have processed the whole thing into a song." [Klaus Hoffmann]
It was when two brothers didn’t get along,
And since then,
It was for thousands of years war was part of our lives,

It was from nomads to farmers,
From ancient Romans to the knights,
From Napoleon to modern states,

It was to take another country’s land or to take its wealth,
It was for revolution or religious belief,
It was so many causes to make so many people die,

It was that we didn’t learn
Instead we got more war than before

It was 146 BC when Carthage ceased to exist,
It was 1096 when the Pope’s men left a trail of death,
It was 1618 when thirty years were enough to erase a third of Europes population,
It was 1914 when more than 10 million were to die in a war no one wanted,
It was 1938 when more than 60 million were to die in humans greatest tragedy,

It was that we didn’t learn
Instead we got more war than before

It was technology that made the war incredibly destructive,
War became a meat grinder,
A human life no longer counts for much,

It was that we made weapons that could erase all human life multiple times
What if no one ever goes to a war, if no one ever gives his life for another one,
If everyone stayed with their loved ones, with family, kids and friends
No war would ever happen
But

It was that we didn’t learn
Instead we got more war than before.
