The guitar picking on ‘You Cried for Ten Men Dead’ is simply outstanding. This track never fails to leave me in tears, as Ciaran sings to his father about the impact of Ireland’s struggle on the old man. From fighting for Great Britain in World War II, to joining a revolutionary army in Ireland, to crying for the ten hunger strikers who died in the Maze prison in 1981. The old man fell under the spell of whiskey and was unable to keep it together. Simply breathtaking.

Well, the fallout from a civil war
It fell like bricks on you
For they blame men for their fathers' deeds
Back in nineteen twenty-two
Then the Blueshirts kept the veterans down
And your widowed mother too
And yous walk without a shoe
And yous walk without a shoe
And yous walk without a shoe

So you set up home in Chorley town
Many women's hearts you'd won
And you worked to send the shillings back
For you were the eldest son
But they called you up and made you wear
A beret and a gun
And you walkеd to Cyprus, son
And you walked to Cyprus, son
And you walked to Cyprus, son

But the firе water found your heart
And you couldn't find a goal
Oh, the whiskey had your soul
Oh, the whiskey had your soul
Oh, the whiskey had your soul

But that conscripted British uniform
It weighed heavy on your back
So you fell in with your father's men
On the day that you got back
And the native farmers sung your praise
Of the rebels they would shout
When yous burned the landlords out
When yous burned the landlords out
When yous burned the landlords out

But the fire water found your heart
And you couldn't find a goal
No, the whiskey had your soul
Oh, the whiskey had your soul
Oh, the whiskey had your soul

And you marched the streets of Lurgan
In the early summer sun
You put me on your shoulders
That day in eighty-one
And it wasn't Thatcher's batons had you weeping as we fled
No, you cried for ten men dead
Oh, you cried for ten men dead
Oh, you cried for ten men dead

But the fire water found your heart
And you couldn't find a goal
Oh, the whiskey had your soul
Oh, the whiskey had your soul
Oh, the whiskey had your soul

And for twenty years, your throat stayed dry
But you never found a goal
No, the whiskey had your soul
Oh, the whiskey had your soul
Oh, the whiskey had your soul
