I used to laugh when older folks
spoke of the good old days
I thought they were just afraid
of the changin' way ..
The clothes we wore were different
our hair was much too long
Our music pushed the boundaries
and often we were wrong ..
We were the long-haired hippie freaks marchin' in the streets
Stoned out hippies marchin with our feet
Long haired hippies – just doin' our thing
We were the long-haired hippie freaks marchin' the streets
Long haired hippies, just doin' our thing
Marchin' through that decade,
the decade of truth and love ..
We shouted of injustice
waved it like a flag
We tore it and we trampled it
and burned it like a rag
We tore down religion
attacked the status quo
Put morality in a box
and tied it with a bow
We were the long-haired hippie freaks marchin' in the streets
Stoned out hippies marchin' with our feet
Long haired hippies – just doin' our thing
We were the long haired hippie freaks marchin' the streets
Long haired hippies, just doin' our thing
Marchin' through that decade,
the decade of truth and love ..
We grew our hair and broke all the rules
and criticized the war
found ourselves portrayed as fools
as if we didn’t know the score
But change came to our nation
and to our lives as well
We advanced our station
as all the fences fell
We were the long haired hippie freaks marchin' in the streets
Stoned out hippies marchin' with our feet
Long haired hippies – just doin' our thing
We were the long-haired hippie freaks marchin' the streets
Long haired hippies, just doin' our thing
