Sleeping in a white bed, safe within a big house…
Going to a white school, living by the rules…

Hiding from the young boys… Playing with my new toys…
Climbing in the tall trees… Laughing in the breeze…

We were living on the other side of their desperation,
where humanity was denied by segregation.
A people persecuted according to their colour –
victims of a system called Apartheid.

Lying on a white beach… Driving down a wide street…
Dancing in a new dress… Watching the sunset…

We were living on the other side of their desperation,
where humanity was denied by segregation.
A people persecuted according to their colour –
victims of a system called Apartheid.

Conditioned to believe in an unjust legal system,
conditioned to accept and to not question
the enforcements to abide by the
laws that made us different,
we lived our separate lives, polarized,
black and white, stigmatized –
the privileged and the other side.
