Paleface

In 2017, the Finnish people celebrated their 100 years of independence. In 2018, they are thinking or trying to think back to the horrors of a cruel civil war fought between the Reds and the Whites in the early months of 1918, one that left behind 37 000 casualties and a divided nation with bitterness, hatred, grief, shame and open wounds. The agonizing memory of this gruesome war has not been forgotten. Instead and despite countless studies, theses, documentaries, movies, plays and novels, it's been suppressed, hushed up, kept in silence fore 100 years and counting as pointed out by Paleface in this heartbreaking song.

The roots of this song are in Kuolemaantuomitun hyvästijättö (Farewell of the condemned or L'addio del condannato a morte) written by unknown the day before his execution in one of the prisoner camps where some 12 000 Reds were executed, often without trial, or died of hunger and diseases during the post-war White terror. For having updated this song that has always touched me, brought it to a new level to commemorate the darkest hours of the Finnish history, Paleface deserves my greatest respect.
Piikkilanka-aitoi, langanlaihoi vankei kaivamaan laitettiin.
Punikit tunnisti hihanauhoista, paukkuraudoilla taisteltiin,
ei arkkulautoi, rautanauloi, joukkohaudoista vaiettiin.

Ja me tultiin lännestä, panin lakkiini kuusenhavun.

Sota, jota me kannetaan sisällä, sukupolvissa pojat saa isältä,

(MUTSI!)

Älä itke äiti kadonnutta poikaasi,
vaikka sulta riistetty ois ainoo turvasi.
Niin huoles heitä, toivees peitä kaikki unholaan
ja oota kunnes iäisyydes' tavataan.

Ja sit tuli rauha, mut liian kauan niit vietiin saunojen taa.
Oli vanhat kaunat, punanauhat, tää on joukkuhautojen maa.
Tuli turpasaunat, rosvolaumat reikärautojen kaa,
valkonen terrori, punanen terrori, vaakalaudalla maa.

vaikka sulta riistetty ois ainoo turvasi.

SONG OF THE CIVIL WAR

Barbed wire fences, prisoners nothing but skin and bone put to dig.
Those were dark days, distressing, forced into oblivion for years.
The Reds wore their sleeve bands, battles were fought with firearms,
no coffin boards nor iron nails, no talk about mass graves.

We came from the west, I wore a spruce twig on my hat.
In the footsteps of first lieutenant Melin 1) I conquered the Main Street.
I saw men working a ski track across the ice of Lake Näsijärvi.
Now that there's nothing left smoke is rising from the debris.

What we need now is a peacemonger instead of a hatemonger,
to beat swords into ploughshares, God how it's cold here.
The war we carry inside ourselves, passed over from father to son,
landlords and farmhands holding back their tears missing their mother.

(MOM!)

Mother, don't cry over your lost son
even if you've been deprived of your only protection.
Throw away your worries, hide all your hopes in oblivion
and wait until we are reunited in eternity.

And then came peace, but far too long there were executions without trial.
There were old grudges, red sleeve bands, this is a land of mass graves.
There were beatings, gangs of bandits with firearms,
White terror, Red terror, a nation at stake.

At the People's House, I was given a rifle and a sleeve band all wet,
at Kalevankangas 2), I saw Golgotha, it took too long, we were hungry,
there was tyranny, there was a tyrant, there was sleet in the bullet rain,
at Sorinahde 2), the going got rough and my heart was pounding like a hammer.

What sort of a song do we sing now, what do you see when you open your eyes,
how does it feel when guns are fired and men fall down like grain?
How does it look like watching from further away, how does it feel to bury your child,
what is it we are keeping in silence, not talking about?

Mother, don't cry over your lost son
even if you've been deprived of your only protection.
Throw away your worries, hide all your hopes in oblivion
and wait until we are reunited in eternity.

Farewell Father, Mother, sisters and brothers.
I won't see you again however much I'd like to.
You won't know when it's time and the night falls.
My life is a dream only and my work is done.
1) A White Guard officer whose company managed to seize control of the Red Guard headquarters at Näsinlinna during the battle of Tampere.

2) Battle sites in Tampere.
